Arsenal dominant but unable to overcome stubborn Atletico Madrid

Arsenal produced a dominant first-half display in their Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid at the Emirates, but failed to find the net.

The Gunners did have the ball in the back of the net midway through the first 45 minutes, but the goal was disallowed for offside against Gabriel Martinelli.

Eberechi Eze’s early deflected strike hit the crossbar, while Myles Lewis-Skelly fired a left-footed shot wide.

Before the match, Mikel Arteta’s side had a perfect record in the Champions League so far this season, following victories against Athletic Club and Olympiacos.

Their defense is yet to have a breakthrough in the contest, but goalkeeper David Raya almost gifted Atletico an opener when he rushed off his line and almost paid.

Arteta’s men are off to a good start in all competitions this season. As well as putting in impressive performances in Europe, the north Londoners are currently three points clear at the top of the Premier League, having conceded just three goals in eight top-flight matches.

The Gunners also have a run of six wins in their last six outings against Spanish sides – a Champions League record.
