True Detective returned for a successful fourth season seven years after season 3 aired. Subtitled “Night Country”, the season was largely a success due to its Alaskan setting. Apple TV released another show with a similar setting, and it dominates the streamer’s top ten. The last frontier has been streaming for five weeks and is currently at the top of the rankings, according to current FlixPatrol data. It dethroned fan favorite dramas like The morning show And Slow horseswhich also releases new episodes every week.
Located in one of the coldest places on earth, The last frontier is a crime thriller created by The blacklist Creator Jon Bokenkamp. Contrary to True Detectivewhich explores crime with supernatural nuances, The last frontier bases its premise on government conspiracies. At the center of it all is US Marshal Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), responsible for ensuring public order in his isolated and close-knit community. However, things change when a plane carrying prisoners crashes in the tundra. The show’s official logline explains:
“Remnick’s jurisdiction is upended when a prison transport plane crashes in a remote wilderness, releasing dozens of violent inmates. Charged with protecting the town he has sworn to keep safe, he begins to suspect that the crash was no accident, but the first step in a well-laid plan with far-reaching and devastating implications.”
The last frontier features Bokenkamp’s signature themes, including criminal masterminds, government conspiracies, and complex federal officers. Bokenkamp wrote the show alongside Richard D’Ovidio. Other cast members include Dominique Cooper (Havlock), Haley Bennett (Sidney), Simone Kessel (Sarah), Dallas Gold Tooth (Hutch), Tait Blum (Luke), and Alfred Woodard (Bradford).
What’s happening with ‘True Detective’ season 5?
Since HBO renewed the series for a fifth season following the success of season 4, updates have been pouring in, with the writer-showrunner Issa Lopez landing in Jamaica Bay, New York, as the next location. Nicolas Cage is in talks to direct the season, details of which are being kept under wraps. “Issa has a lot to say, much like she did with Night Country. It’s a different medium but just as powerful,” said the head of HBO drama and films. Francesca Orsisaid in an interview. Production is expected to begin soon, with a launch date planned for 2027.
In the meantime, new episodes of The last frontier are available to stream Fridays on Apple TV. The logline for this week’s episode reads: “Fairbanks is hit by a massive power outage. Sarah spots someone suspicious in the emergency room. Sidney attempts to gain control of a key piece of evidence.”
