Apple’s Big Fall event has just ended, and we rushed out of the Steve Jobs Theater to get our hands on the last iPhones. Here is an overview of the new iPhone 17, Apple’s basic model this year, which is joined by the iPhone Plus thin Air and the iPhone 17 Pro-IPhone plus robust and pro max-there is no longer this time.
The first place to start is the rear camera. Not because a lot has changed here, but rather because it has not been: although the iPhone 17 pro and Air both adopted horizontal “trays”, the regular 17 has the same objectives stacked vertically than last year. This means that it is the only iPhone 17 which actually looks like the iPhone 16 range – which could be a good or a bad thing, from your point of view.
The two rear cameras are alike, but there was a big change. The two objectives now use 48 megapixel sensors – a large upgrade for ultrairs, which was previously 12 megapixel. Apple claims that the main camera will double as a 2x telephoto lens, while ultrawid takes care of macro tasks, but do not expect a camera as versatile as those of pros – it’s even better than the unique lens in the air. The selfie camera has also been improved, with an 18 megapixel sensor supported by the front of the stage for an automatic framing and a uniform orientation adjustment.
The ordinary iPhone is always the last to obtain the new brilliant features that Apple launches the pros, but it seems particularly left on behalf this year with the air in the mixture and a new design for the pro. But the improvements in the selfie camera will be appreciated here by anyone who takes place in the basic model, and the colors are pleasantly saturated in person.
You will get five color options with the basic iPhone 17: lavender, blue, black, white and sage mist. However, they are all at the end of the moderate pastel spectrum – strangely, you will have to opt for the bright orange of 17 pro to obtain a really impactful finish this year.
This does not mean that nothing has changed. The iPhone 17 followed the traces of the 16 pro models last year by narrowing its telescope for a slightly larger screen, going from 6.1 inches in the iPhone 16 to 6.3 inch now. This means that it has the same size screen as the iPhone 17 Pro, which gives you a less upgrade reason.
The size is not the only upgrade either. This is the first year that the basic iPhone included the refresh rate support up to 120 Hz, finally corresponding to a feature that you can find on Android phones of $ 200. This should mean a smoother scrolling and smoother animations, helped by the A19 upgrade chip – it is a change that is sometimes difficult to notice at the beginning, but is immediately apparent when you return to a screen at 60 Hz. It is also a brighter screen than before, with an external brightness of 3,000 nits, and is protected by the new more difficult ceramic shield.
Add more power thanks to the updated A19 chipset, the longer battery life and the Magsafe 25W load support faster, and the iPhone 17 is a larger update than many of us.
The iPhone 17 starts at $ 799, the same price as on the 16th, but you get double storage at 256 GB. It will be available on order from this Friday, with devices that hit store shelves on September 19.
