Amazon’s main video has a collection of underwater films and unfairly forgotten. The massive streamer’s films library has a Westerner who was deprived of the attention it deserved by the Pandemic of Covid-19, one of the best dramas of 2024 and the most underestimated film directed by one of the most acclaimed filmmakers of the last 20 years. He even has a science fiction film that you have probably never heard of before, although it is a blockbuster that First United Tom Cruise with his future director “Top Gun: Maverick”.
Here are seven films of jewels hidden in difficulty on Prime Video in July.
“One of the most violent years” (2014)
Released in the middle of the ascent of the A24 Up The Independent Film World, “A Most Violent Year” by the writer, director JC Chandor, is a detective combustion police drama that deserves to be better known among the movies. The film follows a fuel supplier (Oscar Isaac) whose membership in its own professional and moral compass is tested by corrupt competitors, family instability and unjustified and high -level attention in the city of the 1980s.
Presenting a pair of powerful simmer performance of Isaac and Chastain, who plays the woman with Tact of Abel d’Isaac, “a most violent year” is a measured drama which strengthens her tension and her emotional weight as and when. Shot with a beautiful light in the mute by the director of photography Bradford Young, it is the rare return to American dramas of the 1970s who do not feel false or forced, but rather textured and captivating. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s now your luck.
“Slow West” (2015)
The first feature film by Scottish filmmaker John Maclean, “Slow West”, is quite his own thing. He follows a young Scotland (Kodi Smiti-McPhee) who goes to the American West in search of the love of his life (Caren Pistorius) and eventually hired an Irish bonuse hunter (Michael Fassbender) to protect him along the way. Thanks to his sense of romance and his fanciful dialogue, “Slow West” sometimes feels like a western riff on a traditional fairy tale – an atmosphere that the director of photography Robbie Ryan is strengthening with his brilliant and colorful cinematography.
The film is undermining its fantastic sequence in each turn, however, by engaging in soft-soft humor and brutal violence. The resulting film is a Western who moves, sounds and looks like no other. It is a distinct vision with a surprisingly tender heart and an even more ruthless nasty sequence. By browsing only 84 minutes, it also does not take your time for granted.
“Something Wild” (1986)
The “something wild” by director Jonathan Demme should not work, and yet it is. This is the magic of Demme and this incredible and subversive comic thriller. The film follows an investment banker duly (Jeff Daniels) who makes an impromptu road trip with a carefree woman (Melanie Griffith). What starts as a sexy and erotic journey quickly turns into a nightmarish fight for personal freedom; However, when Audrey de Griffith accidentally collides with her ex-possessive abusive ex-husband (Ray Liotta), who is hell to recover it.
This bold and poorly won over the slight eccentric adventure in pure tension turned by the stomach would flow less films, but not “something wild”. This 1986 classic is venerated among moviegoers for a reason. It is one of the best films that Demme, whose other films include “Silence of the Lambs” and “Philadelphia”, never made. More viewers should know, which is why you should check it now that it is on a first -rate video.
“The Bikeriders” (2024)

Based on a photo book by Danny Lyon, this exploration soaked in a distinctly American subculture follows the rise and moral fall of a fictitious motorcycle club in the Midwest in the 1960s.
Simultaneously romantic and clearly in the eyes, “The Bikeders” draws a formalist inspiration of similar dramas like “Goodfellas” and “Casino” to create a portrait affecting a very specific moment in time. In doing so, “The Bikeriders” makes you not only fall in love with the same freedom of wind in your hair which motivates its central motorcyclists, but also feel the same sadness and the same sorrow as they do as a time but inevitably transform their club into something unrecognizable. The film was the first of Nichols in eight years, and it turned out to be a welcome and remarkable return to the form for the filmmaker “Mud” and “Take Shelter”.
“News of the World” (2020)
Director Paul Greanggrass “News of the World” was released in the middle of the locking of Covid-19 in 2020 and, therefore, stole completely under the radar with occasional moviegoers. Five years later, he also did not experience the outbreak of popularity that she is worth either. Based on a novel of the same name of Paulette Jiles, the film follows a former veteran of the civil war (Tom Hanks) which travels through Frontier America sharing newspapers and stories from all over the country.
Along the way, he agreed to take a young girl (Helena Zengel) raised by Amerindians with a few surviving members of his biological family. Captain Kidd de Hanks comes to take care of Johanna de Zengel and feels more and more forced to protect her from the dangers of the American West. The film itself, meanwhile, explores in a moving and discreet way how it is the personal ties that ultimately make us pass even the most confronted and unstable moments.
“First man” (2018)
There may be no more underestimated film on this list than “First Man”. A ridiculous controversy surrounding the inclusion by the film of the American flag tested its pre-liberation campaign, and as a follow-up of the director Damien Chazelle to his Oscar-Land musical “La Land”, the film was considered a disappointment by many. But “first man” is anything but that. Chazelle’s drama on Neil Armstrong (Ryan Gosling) and the difficulties he suffered, both personal and professional, during his trip to become the first man to walk on the Moon is an introspective and subversively silent drama.
Chazelle is no stranger to the capture of the show on the big screen, and he does it in several breathtaking pieces in “First Man”. But what is even more impressive is the way he captures the epic but deeply personal emotional scope of Armstrong’s trip. It is a reflected, affecting and haunting film – the one that greatly benefits from a performance of a nuanced star of Gosling which could well be the best that the actor has ever given.
“Oblivion” (2013)
Speaking of underestimated films made by talented directors, “Oblivion” is the film that brought the filmmaker “Top Gun: Maverick” Joseph Kosinski and the star Tom Cruise Ensemble. Based on an unpublished graphic novel, the film follows a maintenance technician (cruise) responsible for recovering the remains of a land marked by the war and converting the remaining seawater reserves of the planet into energy platforms for the space colony where the rest of humanity fled.
However, when he discovers the survivor (Olga Kurylenko) of a crushed spacecraft, he begins to question everything he thought that he knew about his mission and the war that left the land uninhabitable. Elegant and full of action, “Oblivion” is an atmospheric science fiction adventure film visually magnificent and refreshing. It is perhaps not as surprising as “Top Gun: Maverick”, but “forgetting” is always a memorable and exciting blockbuster that makes the most absolute of Cruise and the shared love of Kosinski for waterfalls and practical effects.
