A California federal judge judged Thursday that three authors pursuing Anthropic on the violation of copyright can bring together a collective appeal representing all American writers whose work would have been downloaded from libraries of hacked works.
The file alleges that Anthropic, the competitor of Openai supported by Amazon behind the Chatbot Claude, “violated the law on copyright by downloading Napster of millions of works”. He alleges that the company has downloaded up to seven million copies of books of pirated works.
The new decision has an impact on a trial brought last August by the authors Andrea Bartz, Charles Graeber and Kirk Wallace Johnson, who alleged that Anthropic had “built a company of several billion dollars stealing hundreds of thousands of pounds protected by copyright”. At the end of last month, a federal judge ranked on the side of the anthropic to rule that the formation of his AI models on legally purchased books was fair use, but noted that the company should face a separate trial to use allegedly hacked books.
He also followed the trial that Reddit brought against Anthropic last month, saying that the Robots of the IA company had reached Reddit more than 100,000 times since last July, after Anthropic had declared that he had blocked them to do so.
The trial of authors is part of a growing media, platforms, businesses and creatives that pursue AI societies on copyright violation – for example, the Universal Music trial in 2023 against Anthropic on “Systematic and widespread violation of their words of songs protected by copyright” – Slice of the profits slide.
