An surprisingly hilarious horror film stuck in a franchise that is completely out of ideas

When the first V / H / S Film, produced by Bloody Disgusting, was released in 2012, it was a new vision of horror, combining anthology and found sub-genres in realistic terror and the size of a bite. The film created some of the most terrifying moments in recent horror, and its success led to a franchise that was built on budding filmmakers and established names. Some suites were pretty good, while others fell flat (we look at you V / H / S: Viral), but the last efforts, such as last year V / H / S / Beyondwere a return to form. So how the eighth franchise film, V / H / S / Halloweenstack? Well, it is definitely the funniest of the franchise, but although it is filled with blood, Segments derived from trembling cameras, incessant cries and jump fears quickly become frustrating. It is not at all a horrible film, but you have already played this band, and it begins to wear thin.
What is “V / H / S / Halloween” is talking about?
As for all V / H / S movies, V / H / S / Halloween consists of several segments of different directors. “Diet Phantasma”, by the musical director Bryan Ferguson Serves as the film as a film, because we return there throughout the film. “Diet Phantasma” consists of a series of shorts revolving around a sodium taste test with bloody consequences, because the without mistrust testers experience deadly reactions when they take a sip of the drink. If you are a gore, you will certainly not be disappointed by what comes out of these cans.
There are five main segments in V / H / S / Halloween. Anna Zlokovic Directs “Coachie Cochie COO”, where two teenage girls are stuck in a house at Halloween night with a frightening silhouette known by children of the city under the name of Maman. Paco PlazaThe brain behind the films of sequences found, is perfect for the V / H / S structure, when it arrives to direct “Ut supra sic infra”, a Spanish story which cuts both senses between the images found and a police question at the day after a mass murder where the eyes of the victims are removed.
The best short film from afar is the “fun size” by Casper Kelly, Casper Kelly, Casper Kelly, Where four children ignore a bowl of Halloween candies who says “one per person”, leading them to a candy factory unlike everything you’ve ever seen. Alex Rossy Perry‘s (Its smell) “Kidprint” is a story on a video store where employees make children’s videos in case they disappear (yes, it was one thing), only for many of these children to disappear, leaving the employees of the suspected company. The last segment, “home hant”, of Micheline Pitt-Norman And HR Normanis another haunted house story, this time about a father obsessed with Halloween who takes his passion for the creation of the most frightening lair too far when he comes across a vinyl record that evokes something beyond when played.
‘V / H / S / Halloween’ is the funniest film in the franchise
Horror and comedy go hand in hand, because the two are intended to provoke a unique physical response from the spectator that other genres cannot reach. Sometimes, so well done, as with classics like Gremlins And ShoutA horror comedy can tickle your funny bone and send chills to the spine simultaneously. The V / H / S franchise has had segments which are pure horror, many that count on the exaggerated gore and spectacle, and others which aim to be funny sick. Take the “fur babies” from last year V / H / S / BeyondFor example, in which a woman operating a dog session company transforms humans into pets. It’s silly and rude, but very effective. It’s what V / H / S / Halloween Aims in his tone more than all the previous films.
So, does this strategy work? The results are mixed. It’s silly, but attracting the attention to see a soda -taste test session turning into a gore festival, but when it is the same thing every time we return to the frame of the “Diet Phantasma” frame, The shocks and laughter of the absurdity of all this disappear quickly. “COOCHIE COOCHIE COO” could have been your traditional story about people trapped in a house with a monster, so Anna ZLOKOVIC deserves the merit of having tried to go beyond the norm, but that falls flat when the beast becomes the source of comedy. The segment breaks down into one Barbarous The scam with a monster obsessed with being a mother who has six breasts (with milk that escapes), so you are too busy laughing at the audacity to feel fear.
Comedy is lighter in some of the other segments, But the “fun size” takes it out of the park in one of the best V / H / S segments in recent years. It is chaos out of the wall, with deformeal bad guys directly from a fast food advertising of the exasperating old school, and a plethora of blood and guts while the segment is decomposed to show us how these demented psychos make their candies. With candy pulling orifice and cut penis and slowly descending into a treadmill, Casper Kelly (which has a long story working with Adult Swim), wants its viewers to mock. However, he does not forget to relax at the same time with rather frightening scenes. It is the one who will stay with you, and if you are a child who looks at this, you will never take more than a candy in a bowl while doing a tour or treatment.
The “V / H / S” format has become predictable
V / H / S / Halloween has a potential with intriguing premises, but it is retained and maintained in the middle of the peloton due to a central problem. The last sequel is relentless at the point of exhaustion, and at 1 hour and 54 minutes (a segment should have been cut), it’s too. Each short film consists of characters who are in difficulty, then shouting their lungs as they run with their trembling camera while something jumps, making them scream louder and run faster.
Sometimes it backs up, like when the “fun waist” fortunately moves from the madness of the trembling cam, or when the last segments are seated calm for a few minutes, but for the most part, It is the Rinse-And-Repeat Trope found racing images, for fear of jumping and shouting to the heavens. V / H / S / Halloween Knows that it is an easy way to go to a spectator, but being constantly on the limit is not the same as being afraid. Congratulations to the filmmakers for coming to the table with different ideas that could ignite their career, but when it is exactly the same method of narration each time, no matter how unique the original concept is.
Please continue to make V / H / S movies because there is nothing else like them. They are the ideal way for established names to reconnect with their passion at a more basic level, while giving a platform to those who rose. The latest films have given the franchise a new life because the bases of the stories are so exciting, but it is time to try to come to horror in different ways. Not all segments should be an assault on the senses. It is as if they felt limited by the short period of time and aim to do everything as fast as they can. This can work here and there, but the best horror comes when we slow down everything and we are paralyzed by our fears of calm and the unknown. V / H / S / Halloween is dark and denied, and is the funniest film of this franchise. But if the V / H / S series refused it in a notch and tried different narrative formats, the following could be even better.
