An earthquake rumbles off the coast of Oregon, near Newport

NEWPORT Oregon (KPTV) – An earthquake was reported off the Oregon coast west of Newport around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The earthquake was 5.4 magnitude, according to a report from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), at a depth of about 6.2 miles.

This area is seismically active and it is not uncommon for earthquakes to be reported. Several earthquakes have been reported this year off the Oregon coast, located in the Cascadia subduction zone, a 700-mile-long fault line.

Scientists predict that there is a significant risk of an earthquake of magnitude 9 or greater occurring on this fault line within the next 50 years.
