About the UTSA Roadrunners
Handily surpassing an overmatched opponent in the second season opener under head coach Austin Claunch, the Roadrunners defeated the College of Biblical Studies in a 97-30 game on Wednesday. In the process, the Roadrunners set three program records, keeping the Ambassadors with the fewest opponent points (30), fewest field goals (8) and lowest shooting percentage (14.3%) in 1,308 games in UTSA basketball history. Additionally, CBS’s scoring total also set the Conference USA record, toppling a league standard from 2014. The Roadrunners shot 50.6 percent from the floor, putting up 30 points off 22 CBS turnovers and scoring 37 on the fast break. Making the most of their height advantage, UTSA won the rebounding battle with a 59-32 advantage. In total, 11 players scored and five in double figures: Macaleab Rich (15), Kaidon Rayfield (13), Jamir Simpson (13), Mathéo Coffi (10) and Dorian Hayes (10). Leading the glass, Rayfield had a double-double of 13 and 13 in his college debut. Baboucarr Njie led the team with three blocks and three steals. Austin Nunez distributed four assists to pace the Roadrunners. Rich shot a team-high 7 of 11, also grabbing four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Returning just four players from last season, the Roadrunners welcomed 11 newcomers to the roster (eight transfers and three high schoolers), 10 of whom saw playing time against the Ambassadors in the opener.
The Roadrunners stuck with most elements of a Claunch-coached team in the first game. Last season, UTSA ranked ninth nationally in fast break scoring with 15.1 points per game, ninth nationally in steals (9.5) and 14th (15.2) in forced turnovers. UTSA also let him fly from distance last season, outscoring the American and finishing 25th nationally a year ago with 9.9 three-pointers per game.
About the SIUE Cougars
In the seventh season under Michael Barone, SIUE had a historic 2024-25, reaching the program’s first NCAA Tournament appearance, winning the Ohio Valley Conference and finishing with a 22-12 record after falling to No. 1 seed Houston in the NCAA First Round. The Cougars return seven players from last season, losing three starters and their two leading scorers. However, among the seven, over 1,000 points and 650 rebounds are back, with SIUE retaining 42.2 percent of the scoring and 50.7 of the rebounds from a year ago compared to their 71.6 points per game and 38.1 points per game.
Highlighting the Cougars’ comebacks, 6-foot-9 junior guard/forward Ring Malith was an All-OVC tournament selection and led SIUE on the glass with a 7.0 RPG average, adding 11.1 points per game on 38.8 percent shooting. Their transfer class is highlighted by sophomore guard Harrison Alexander of Mississippi State, senior point guard Jack Campion (5.3 ppg, 3.4 apg) of Southern Indiana and senior guard Darius Robinson (7.4 ppg, 1.6 rpg) of Oral Roberts.
The Cougars opened with a similar opponent Tuesday, beating East West University, 119-50. SIUE shot 58.9 percent from the floor and 36 percent from three, outshooting EWU 50-23 and forcing 29 turnovers – scoring 31 on the fast break and 44 on turnovers. Six players scored in double figures out of 13, led by Ring and Robinson with 16 each. Ring pulled down six rebounds and returner Jo Valrie led the team with nine rebounds and five steals.
