All the costume reveals and best moments

Beloved, we are gathered here today to watch Craig Melvin take the place of the Purple One himself. Hailing from the great state of Minnesota, Prince has been music royalty for over four decades.

His most memorable albums include “1999”, “Diamonds and Pearls” and the self-titled debut album “Prince”. But it was the 1984 film “Purple Rain” and its Academy Award-winning soundtrack that cemented his legacy as one of the greatest musicians of all time.

Performing Prince’s Oscar-winning hit “Purple Rain,” Craig told TODAY in an interview ahead of this morning’s reveal that for him, this year’s costume is probably the best yet.

“Of all the characters I’ve ever played, I’m probably the most excited about this one,” Craig said. “He’s my second favorite artist of all time, behind Michael Jackson.”

A long-time fan of the famous singer, Craig recalls being in the audience at a concert in 2004, saying it was one of the two best shows he had ever attended. “So this one is close to my heart,” he explained.

Because Prince is among his top artists, Craig said it was important to get all the details.

“This will be my first year wearing heels,” he told TODAY.com. “Prince wore high heels when he performed, so we like to be as authentic as possible.”

Shoes aside, what’s the biggest challenge of taking on the famous musician?

“For me it’s that they put so much time and thought into the costume and makeup and hair, I don’t want to ruin the only part I have, which is lip syncing and playing guitar.”

For this reason, Craig said he practices his air guitar at home to ensure that when he picks up the replica of Prince’s iconic white ax, he will master it.

“Little Red Corvette…woo, hoo…” he sings out loud.

Not bad. Is this her favorite Prince song?

No. “It’s ‘Purple Rain,’” he confirms before launching into the chorus. “Purple rain…purple rain…”

Keep going, Craig. Continue!
