All about Steve, Terri, Bindi and Robert

The Irwins are a tight-knit group.

Famed wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin married Terri Irwin (née Raines) in 1992. They later welcomed daughter Bindi Sue Irwin in 1998 and son Robert Clarence Irwin in 2003.

Since Steve’s passing in 2006, the family has honored his passion for animals. Terri, her children, Bindi’s husband Chandler Powell, and daughter Grace Warrior Irwin Powell all starred in Crikey! These are the Irwins for four seasons, which chronicled the family that ran Australia Zoo. They continue to run the zoo, which Steve’s parents first established as a reptile park in 1970, until today.

Steve Irwin

Steve, who was best known for hosting the Animal Planet series The crocodile hunter, was born on February 22, 1962 in Upper Ferntree Gully, Victoria, Australia.

When Steve was a child, his parents opened the Beerwah Reptile Park, which later became Australia Zoo, according to the website. His childhood in the park helped develop his love for animals and he took over management of the park in 1991 – the same year he met Terri, a visiting tourist who would later become his wife.

On June 4, 1992, Steve and Terri were married in Eugene, Oregon, and later welcomed Bindi and Robert. Steve often said that “if he was going to be remembered for anything, he hoped it would be for being a good father,” according to the Australia Zoo website.

He died on September 4, 2006, when he was pierced through the heart and lungs by a stingray barb while filming off the coast of Australia.

In January 2018, Terri shared with PEOPLE, “Steve was someone who was larger than life and truly lived life to the fullest. Even though he passed away at 44, he lived such a full life and that’s what I want to do and share.”

Terri Irwin

Terri was born on July 20, 1964 in Eugene, Oregon. Like Steve, she has a passion for wildlife and environmental conservation, according to Australia Zoo.

In addition to its role in The crocodile hunterTerri starred in Crikey! These are the Irwinswhich chronicles his life with his children and family while they ran the Australia Zoo. She continues to run the zoo today alongside her family.

These days, Terri is also excited about her role as grandmother to Bindi’s daughter, Grace. In an April 2021 special, she said becoming a grandmother was “the most wonderful, wonderful, indescribable moment.”

Shortly after Grace was born, Terri shared on“Love is not a big enough word. My heart is incredibly happy. And I know Steve would be beyond proud. Grace is the next generation who will continue her mission and message of conservation.”

In the years after Steve’s death, Terri also said she didn’t expect to remarry.

“Steve, that was for me,” she said The Courier-Mail in November 2021. “That’s how it is. I had a big, big love and it was enough to last a lifetime.”

Terri reiterated this sentiment in an interview with PEOPLE in January 2018, sharing that she hadn’t been on a date since Steve’s death and wasn’t looking to date.

“I’m happy. I have two beautiful children, a really full plate. I already had my happily ever after,” she said.

Bindi Sue Irwin

Steve and Terri’s first child, Bindi, was born on July 24, 1998 in Buderim, Queensland, Australia. It’s named after Steve’s favorite crocodile, according to Australia Zoo.

Bindi followed in her parents’ footsteps as an animal lover, hosting a children’s wildlife show called Bindi, the jungle girlwhich premiered in 2007. Along with Terri and Robert, Bindi also starred in Crikey! These are the Irwins on Animal Planet. In 2015, Bindi won season 21 of Dancing with the stars alongside his partner Derek Hough.

She is married to Powell, whom she met in 2013. He proposed on her 21st birthday in 2019, and they married in an intimate wedding in March 2020 at the Australia Zoo.

In an Instagram post at the time, Bindi shared, “Mom helped me get ready, Robert walked me down the aisle, Chandler became my husband and together we lit a candle in Dad’s memory. We shared tears, smiles and love.”

Exactly one year later, Bindi and Chandler welcomed a baby girl into their family. Grace Warrior Irwin Powell was born on March 25, 2021.

“There are no words to describe the endless amount of love in our hearts for our adorable baby girl,” Bindi shared on Instagram at the time. “She chose the perfect day to be born and we feel extremely lucky.”

Bindi also opened up about how she keeps the memory of her father alive for Grace.

“We have so many documentaries about Dad, and we always play them for Grace,” Bindi told PEOPLE in May 2022. “I didn’t realize how much Dad’s passion for life and his animated facial expressions — I mean, they captivate her.” She also shared that they called Steve “Grandpa Crocodile.”

Robert Irwin

Steve and Terri’s second child Robert was born on December 1, 2003 in Buderim, Queensland, Australia. Like the rest of the Irwins, he is passionate about wildlife conservation, having performed in Crikey! These are the Irwins and continue to work at Australia Zoo. In 2022, he released a photography book entitled Australia by Robert Irwin.

“My father was a very, very passionate photographer,” Robert told PEOPLE in November of that year. “It’s kind of a family affair. He was just as enthusiastic behind the lens as he was in front of it. And that’s always been there and has always been a part of my life.”

Robert currently stars in season 34 of Dancing with the starswhere he joined forces with Witney Carson. He chose to honor his mother, Terri, on Dedication Night, by dancing a contemporary routine to Phil Collins’ “You’ll Be In My Heart.”

“We worked hard and I kind of tapped into some emotions that I hadn’t really had a chance to share before — certainly not publicly,” Robert said in an October 12 TikTok. “I thought a lot about my father, I thought a lot about the ups and downs, the heartbreak, how my mother helped me through it.”

When he’s not dancing, one of Robert’s favorite pastimes is being an uncle to Bindi’s daughter Grace.

“It’s so surreal to be an uncle. It’s the most incredible thing,” he told E! News in October 2022. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had, that’s for sure. She’s so full of energy. She’s so determined. She’s a focused, smart little kid.”

As for Robert’s personal life, he shared that Bindi encouraged him to date — if only to divert his attention.

“Of course, my sister got married and had a kid and there’s always a lot of rumors going around,” he told E! News. “There’s always so many crazy things happening, so Bindi always says, ‘Robert, it’s your turn now. You need to find someone to calm me down!’ ”
