Adam Gilchrist salutes Alex Carey after emotional Ashes Hundred in Adelaide
Meanwhile, legendary Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist has heaped praise on Alex Carey after his special milestone at the Adelaide Oval. Gilchrist described it as a special moment in front of his family, friends and home crowd.
Adam Gilchrist said on Kayo Sports: “It’s a hundred emotions for a quality cricketer. It’s his third in Test cricket. His first in an Ashes. This one’s for you, Dad. He was brilliant with the gloves in Brisbane, at the next level, and he took it to his field with the bat. What a magical moment here on an incredible cricket ground. So many extraordinary feats have been achieved at this venue, and this is one for the ages, a hundred Ashes for Alex Carey.
Carey’s Ashes song ends in disappointment,
However, Carey’s innings ended in an unfortunate manner. Will Jacks bowled a delivery slightly short and outside off stump. Carey tried to play an offensive shot, but the timing was bad. The ball took a top edge, popped up gently near the pitch, and England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith moved quickly and took an easy catch.
As Carey returned after scoring 106 runs from 143 balls, hitting eight fours and a six, the Adelaide Oval gave him a standing ovation for his brilliant knock in the ongoing third Ashes Test 2025-26.
Carey notably began his career as a talented footballer in Greater Western Sydney before returning to South Australia to fully concentrate on cricket, and it was at this point that his father became his perfect coach and mentor. The wicketkeeper has repeatedly acknowledged his father’s role in his career.
In 46 matches, Carey scored 2,205 runs at an average of over 36, with 12 half-centuries to his name. In Ashes, he has so far scored 578 runs at an average of 27.52, with four innings in which he crossed the fifty-run mark in 13 Tests against England.
