Sanju Samson overshadowed, CSK hitter makes history and will Gautam Gambhir be sacked?

Welcome to our special segment, DRS or Daily Review System. In it, InsideSport will provide you with the best yesterday’s cricket stories that you might have missed in the hustle and bustle of your busy life.

The Indian team has reached a new low under Gautam Gambhir. The Indian head coach, who took over from Rahul Dravid last year, managed to endure another Test series whitewash at home. If the 0-3 loss to New Zealand, the first Test series defeat at home after 12 years, wasn’t enough. As if losing the Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) for the first time since 2015 wasn’t enough, India are now completely dominated by South Africa. Apart from this, the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 also began as a CSK batter reached one of the fastest T20 centuries ever. Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav were also among the runners. On that note, we take a look at the top news stories of the day.

Will Gambhir be sacked?

India coach Gautam Gambhir has responded to ever-increasing calls for his withdrawal after another Test series defeat, this time against South Africa. Under Gambhir, India have lost five of their last seven Tests at home and have failed to win a single series against a top seven team. India have won only seven of 19 Tests under his leadership and have a W/L ratio only slightly better than BAN and ZIM. He is also the first Indian coach to oversee two home shutouts and the end of India’s 12-year unbeaten home streak. Asked about his future, Gambhir said the decision was up to the BCCI, while pointing to white-ball successes like the Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. Learn more here.

Sanju Samson eclipsed?

Sanju Samson spent time in the middle as an opener, hit a well-made half-century, and yet, somehow, became a supporting player in his own storyline. Kerala’s chase of 177 against Odisha was lopsided, but it belonged almost entirely to Rohan Kunnummal, whose 121 from 60 balls shredded the bowling. Samson’s 51 off 41 was neat, but his strike rate of 124.39 seemed almost pedestrian next to Kunnummal’s carnage of 201.66. Kerala captain Samson opened and did the stabilizing work. They needed fire, and Kunnummal provided it single-handedly, hitting 10 sixes. The pair’s 177-run stand created SMAT history as the most successful chase without losing a wicket. Learn more here.

History of CSK typing scripts

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) retained player Urvil Patel has broken another record in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, hitting the third-fastest hundred in the history of the tournament. The 27-year-old Gujarat captain launched a 31-ball century against Services in Hyderabad, finishing with 119 off 37 deliveries, including 12 fours and 10 sixes. His efforts propelled Gujarat to an eight-wicket win while chasing 183, built on a 174-run opening stand with Priyesh Desai. Patel already has the fastest SMAT century (28 balls) and is now among the fastest three tons twice. Urvil was signed mid-season by CSK during IPL 2025 as a replacement for Vansh Bedi. Anti-Gautam Gambhir supporters raise slogans

The atmosphere at Barsapara Stadium turned boisterous for their home side after India were humiliated by 408 runs in the second Test, completing a 2-0 whitewash against South Africa. It was India’s biggest defeat by runs in Test history, and the tempers in the stands boiled over. Fans broke out into loud chants of “Gautam Gambhir Haaye Haaye“, targeting the head coach under whom India won only 7 of 19 Tests, including five home defeats and two whitewashes. As the players crossed the boundary, Mohammed Siraj angrily gestured for silence, while batting coach Sitanshu Kotak shouted at the spectators. Instead of celebrating Guwahati’s first Test, the day ended in boos, frustration and humiliation. Read more, click here.

WPL 2026 Mega Auction Today

The first ever WPL mega auction takes place today in New Delhi, with a huge 2026 season expected. With 277 players in the pool but only 73 spots available, competition will be tough as five franchises rebuild virtually from scratch. UPW enters with the biggest purse of Rs 14.5 crore after retaining only Shweta Sehrawat, while GG holds Rs 9 crore. Defending champions MI, DC and RCB have retained strong cores, meaning they will shop more selectively. Big names like Deepti Sharma, Renuka Singh, Meg Lanning, Amelia Kerr and Sophie Ecclestone are headlining and the recency bias of India’s World Cup win could obviously play its part. The auction begins at 3:30 p.m. IST, live on Star Sports and JioHotstar. Learn more here.
