Ajit Agarkar breaks silence on Mohammed Shami’s absence from Indian ODI squad for Australia tour

Indiathe chief selector Ajit Agarkar finally responded to the controversy surrounding the pacemaker Mohammed Shamithe absence of next white ball tour in Australiainsisting Shami would have been included if he was fully fit. Shami, who expressed his snobbery, criticized the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for allegedly neglecting his physical fitness, citing his active participation in the domestic life of Bengal Ranji Trophy as proof of its availability. Agarkar’s comments, delivered at the NDTV Global Summit, shed light on the ongoing debate on fitness and communication dynamics between the player and selectors ahead of the crucial series which begins on October 19.
Ajit Agarkar talks about Mohammed Shami’s fitness concerns and selection
Reacting to Shami’s claims, Agarkar pointed out that the seasoned fast bowler has been in touch with the selection panel over the past few months but was not deemed fit enough to make the squad. “If he was in good shape, he would have been on the plane“, Agarkar firmly said, adding that discussions were held on several occasions.
Agarkar also noted that while he has not reacted much to Shami’s recent comments on social media, he remains open to dialogue and would consider a conversation to clear up any misunderstandings. The chief selector further recognized Shami’s contributions to Indian cricket, highlighting his value to the team, particularly recalling Shami’s performance during India’s Champions Trophy triumph where he was the highest wicket-taker along with Varun Chakravarthy.
Shami, 35, has suffered recurring ankle and knee injuries since the 2023 World Cup, which required surgery and subsequently affected his ability to consistently represent India in the longest format. He last featured for the Test side during the 2023 World Test Championship Final against Australia but has since focused on rehabilitation and domestic cricket.
Shami’s recent comments suggest frustration with the selectors’ failure to inform him of his status, saying: “It is not my job to update the selection panel on my physical condition.” However, Agarkar clarified that the selectors have been proactive in their communication and Shami’s fitness remains the key factor in team selection.
