The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 43, made an unannounced trip to Northern Ireland on October 14, making a series of visits to local organizations. Their first stop was at the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service (NIFRS) new learning and development college in Cookstown, where they took part in exercises and learned how the next generation of firefighters are developing their skills there.

Princess Kate wore a familiar outfit for the first engagement, sporting an olive green Alexander McQueen coat dress that has been in her closet for at least five years. Kate – who is known for recycling outfits, often years apart – debuted the piece during a visit to Bradford Town Hall in January 2020 before reusing the coat during the royal family’s Christmas church outing in 2022.

Before leaving the fire training center, Kate changed her outfit, swapping the long jacket for a shorter coat which revealed a brown skirt. She also changed her shoes, removing her heeled boots for flat boots.

This quick change prepared her for their next stop for the day: Mallon Farm, a flax farm in County Tyrone that is at the forefront of reviving flax farming to make linen in an environmentally friendly way.

At the farm, Princess Kate got to work and tried out a restored heritage machine which is used to ‘break and scutch’ flax.

Prince William and Princess Kate learned from the farm’s Helen Keys and Charlie Mallon about the process of growing and transporting linen “from field to fiber to fabric.”

To round off their visit to the farm, the royal couple also met with Northern Irish linen designers and manufacturers.

The Princess of Wales has long supported the importance of the British textile industry and its role as the cultural and creative voice of the United Kingdom, and she has visited manufacturers to highlight the industry. In a personal connection, his paternal ancestors owned the wool manufacturer and merchant William Lupton & Co, based in Leeds.
