I titled a recent Editors’ Blog post The Age of Monsters. I have been thinking about this message and this theme because I always see more confirmation, more evidence of this dimension of the world we live in now. I emphasize again that the idea here is not that these “monsters” are bad people, although I would say that most of them are to varying degrees. The problem is their gigantism. They are so much more powerful than ordinary people, mainly but not always because of their wealth, that they distort the entire social and political fabric. They’re like big, clumsy, heavy idiots who nevertheless have a power that makes, if not the entire game, at least the entire center of gravity around them.
