Dana Carvey says he was “delicate” with the impression “SNL” Joe Biden

During a recent episode of her podcast “Fly on the Wall”, Dana Carvey discussed what it was to return to “Saturday Night Live” to play Joe Biden. Carvey said that it was “obvious” that the former president struggled and that he was “delicate” to make fun of someone that he felt “mentally compromised”.

“I knew he was mentally compromised, I mean, it was obvious. But it was a delicate thing in the world of comedy,” said Carvey. “There were a lot of people who didn’t want to do anything who would dingate him in an awkward manner.”

Carvey described the feeling of playing Biden as “surreal” and “bizarre”, but always “a lot of pleasure”. He said that his goal with his impression was to be funny without being mean, adding that there were lines that he would not cross.

“It’s the key, if I can do Biden, if I can make everyone Biden to everyone, then I’m where I want to be,” he said. “And to make it funny, he had to be recognizable. And so there were certain things that I did not include in my package.”

The co-host of the podcast and colleague of “SNL”, David Spade, shared his own perspective, explaining that certain public figures make otherwise sensitive “fair game” impressions.

SPADE said: “I think it is easier to make fun of him if he is the president than if it is only a man of 90 years and to say:” Look at this – hole. “So, once he is president, he is fairer.
