The film would have opened on a public suspension which descends in absurdity when “the condemned man ejaculates in the middle of the execution”. This apparently sends the crowd to an “orgiac frenzy”, which prompted a nun to “caress the visible erection of the corpse”.

The new film, which will arrive in the cinemas on Valentine’s Day, has already been struck by Brontë fans’ criticism after photos emerged from Robbie wearing an 80-style wedding dress on the shooting of the film.

The casting of Elordi as Heathcliff has been criticized in particular, because the character is described in the book as having dark hair, dark eyes and dark skin.

While the story shows that Heathcliff’s bad Caction in cinematographic or television adaptations is nothing new – the character was played by Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Ralph Fiennes, Tom Hardy and even Cliff Richard – The cast of Elordi has always raised eyebrows.

Another criticism of Brontë readers is that Elordi, 28, and Robbie, 35, are the bad ages, because their characters are adolescents for a large part of the plot of the book. However, the character Mr. Lockwood also meets Heathcliff 20 years later, when he was around 40 years old.
