Barbarous The second feature of director Zack Cregger, WeaponsNow plays in theaters, and we dive into the twisted mystery in the heart of the film described in the opening narration.

“Last night, at 2:17 am, every child in Ms. Gandy’s class woke up, came out of bed, went down, opened the front door, entered the dark … and they never returned.”

If you haven’t seen the film yet, be aware that Major spoilers Follow from this point.

All of the narration is not entirely exact. A boy named Alex (Cary Christopher) stays in class, and the other children end up coming back … although forever changed by their nightmarish event.

The film deals with the fallout from this incident, the story that takes place from the POV of several characters. Justine Gandy (Julia Garner) must face the abolition of the weight of the suspicions of devastated parents; The father of one of the missing children, Archer Graff (Josh Brolin), harasses Justine while putting her own investigation; The ex-pricing of the city and the ex-Paul of Justine (Alden Ehrenreich) continues a drug addict named James (Austin Abrams) who, according to him, knows more that he does not care to admit it, and the director of the school Andrew (Benedict Wong) checks with the parents of Alex, only to discover that the aunt of the boy Gladys (Amy Madigan)

At this point, we are starting to get answers. It turns out that Gladys is in fact a powerful witch, who orders her nephew to bring her personal objects from her classmates so that she can launch a spell (sticks, string, hair and blood are used in the ritual) and control the mind of children, forcing them all to run and hide in the basement of Alex’s house. Although it is never explicitly stated, Gladys seems to feed on the life force of children (?) In order to rejuvenate and reverse the aging process.

After a series of horrible events lead Justine and Archer at home, they are put on Paul and James, who were also washed by Gladys. They are able to dominate and kill their attackers, but Archer then falls under the fate of the witch and turns against Justine, while Alex’s parents are “armed” against their own son.

In the end, Alex is able to use Gladys’ magic against her, which led to her formerly catatonic classmates chasing the witch and tearing it apart. The narrative of closing tells us that the children have all returned home, and “some of them have even started to speak this year”.
