Mattel presents type 1 barbie diabetes

The last Barbie to make its debut is to pack insulin and a glucose instructor with its high heels and fanciful dresses.

Meet type 1 barbie diabetes, the most recent add to the Pantheon of Barbie – and to a large cry of small size and feet of pastto real estate.

Children who suffer from diabetes will be reflected in an emblematic toy, and those who will not engage in “the game of dolls which extends beyond the lived experience of a child, thus promoting a greater feeling of inclusion and empathy – all the pillars of the Barbie brand mission,” Mattel said in his announcement on Tuesday.

Mattel worked in close collaboration with the research and defense organization of diabetes Breakthrough T1D to create precise versions of the size of a doll of medical equipment that many people with type 1 diabetes bear. Barbie wears a blue polka dot crop top and a ruffled mini-skirt, a color and a pattern that incorporate international symbols of diabetes. The circle means the unit, and the blue color evokes information on health and medical information, according to the International Diabetes Federation, which adopted the symbols in 2006.

“Presentation of a Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes brand an important step in our commitment to inclusiveness and representation,” said Krista Berger, main vice-president of Mattel de Barbie and global doll manager. “Barbie helps shape the first perceptions of children on the world, and reflecting medical conditions like T1D, we make sure that more children can be seen in the stories they imagine and the dolls they love.”

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder in which the pancreas does little or no insulin, the hormone which helps blood sugar to penetrate into the cells of the body to produce energy. The condition, which generally appears in childhood, requires careful management, as complications in the accumulation of blood sugar can be serious. According to American Diabetes Association, around 304,000 children and adolescents are among the 2 million Americans with type 1 diabetes.

In 2024 Mattel presented a blind barbie and a black barbie with Down syndrome in his fashionistas line, after the first introduction in 2023 of a barbie with Down syndrome.
