War films can tell some of the most gripping stories, and 2024 does. Civil war. and it is now becoming a quiet streaming success in the United States. The A24 dystopian action thriller is currently among the Top 10 most-watched films on HBO Max in the United States according to FlixPatrol data.
Civil war features an all-star cast including Kirsten Dunst, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Sonoya Mizuno and Nick Offerman, among others. Civil war follows a group of war journalists, led by Lee Smith (Dunst), a war photojournalist from Colorado. They plan to question the third-term president, head of the country’s authoritarian federal government, before rebels take the city.
Civil war depicts the journalists’ journey from New York to Washington, D.C., where they encounter combat, witness militiamen executing prisoners, and spend the night in a refugee camp. Civil war was a box office success, grossing over $127.3 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million, becoming A24’s most expensive film at the time and their second highest-grossing film.
On rotten tomatoes, Civil war holds a score of 81% on the Certified Fresh Tomatometer. However, the Popcornmeter, based on viewer reviews, scores 69%. Namrata Joshi The new Indian Express gave the film a positive review, stating: “There is then a message of warning in the madness: stop or perish; the choice is entirely ours.”
Reviews of Civil War were mixed
Moira MacDonald from Seattle weather said Civil War “is essentially a horror film, in which the horrors feel uncomfortably close to home.” Some of the more negative reviews include Sam Adams of Slatewhich states: “Garland’s fragility can only be interpreted as a loss of courage. A more successful political film wouldn’t be so reluctant to aim at real targets. »
On IMDb, Civil war holds a 7/10 rating, with over two thousand reviews. IMDb user alex_giblin gave the film a positive review, stating: “This film is about the visceral and unsettling reality of conflict, life and death, and it’s brought to you in a familiar place less than 10,000 miles away, in a foreign country.” »
Meanwhile, IMDb user Clarejoshua called it a “missed opportunity”, saying: “There are times where you think ‘yeah, let’s explore that’ and it just keeps going. The pacing seems disorienting with a huge wait until the action hits and then a non-stop final 15 minutes. On Metacritic, Civil war holds a rating of 75 from critics and a rating of 6.3 from users.
Despite conflicting reviews between audiences and critics, Civil war still managed to find success at the box office and on streaming as well. According to FlixPatrol data, Civil war is currently the second most-watched film on HBO Max in the United States, becoming a quiet streaming hit, behind Leonardo DiCaprio’s dark comedy action thriller, One battle after another.
