Bsod Gard: Windows changes the blue screen of death

The notorious blue screen of death, well known by many Windows users, gets a makeover.

Windows killed the blue screen of death (BSOD), replacing it with the black screen of death (also BSOD). The original blue screen, which also included a sad emoticon, has existed for about 40 years. Windows users will now see a simple black screen and the words: “Your device has encountered a problem and must restart.”

This change comes as Windows embarks on its Windows resilience initiative, a project aimed at “integrating resilience and safety” directly in Windows platforms.

The initiative was announced after the Crowdsstrike breakdown last year, a digital debacle that affected everything, from airlines to banks to grocery stores. Around the world, Windows computers have been struck by the BSOD: an error message that prevents the computer from working.

Now Windows makes movements to “maintain productivity and minimize disturbances”, according to a Microsoft blog article. The company adds a rapid recovery function of machines, so that Microsoft can target problems without manual intervention. The new error screen offers “Simplified IU” – or, a black screen instead of a blue screen.

The change, according to Microsoft, “improves readability”, while the new design “aligns better” with the aesthetic principles of Microsoft.

Say goodbye to the blue screen of death. This is the end of an era.
