A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 Director Thinks Jim Carrey Should Take Over as Freddy Krueger

We’ve heard there might be movement on a new A Nightmare on Elm Street movie for a while at this point, but if and when Freddy Krueger returns to the screen, fans shouldn’t expect to see Robert Englund back in the iconic bladed glove and striped sweater.
“There is no Freddy in me anymore” he said Bloody disgusting in a recent interview. “I could possibly voice a very high-end animated version. It would be nice to be asked to do that, but I know I can’t do the fight scenes for more than one take now, just one angle. I just can’t break my head or anything like that. I’m an old dog! Give me a break.”
Chuck Russell, co-writer and director of what many fans consider the best film in the franchise, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriorshas expressed interest in returning to direct another film, and while he notes that Englund “is the only Freddy” to him, he has a very interesting idea for which actor could reprise the role: Jim Carrey.
“Jim, in my opinion, could do almost anything if he put his mind to it.” he said on Dread Central Development hell podcast. “For Jim to do it, we would have to do something that was another step forward in the Elm Street series – kind of like what Wes did with his very meta New Nightmare. I think Jim would only consider that, and I would only consider operating Jim if there was a bold new direction for Elm Street.”
Russell, who previously worked with Carrey on The maskdid not confirm that he had actually had discussions about making a new ANOES movie, but it definitely sounds like it’s something he’s put a lot of thought into.
“I would love to do another Elm Street if it had everyone’s full support,” he added. “Patricia Arquette said she’d like to start in print again. Very interesting, because she didn’t talk about it much earlier in her career. She’s been so great and has gone on to have such a great career – I think that’s a good idea, too.”
The Hollywood Reporter recently asked Richard Brener, president and chief creative officer of New Line Cinema, if a new film was in development. somewhat optimistic response.
“We hope so. It’s complicated because of the rights.”
American rights to An Elm Street Nightmare the franchise returned to writer-director Wes Craven’s estate in 2019, but New Line retains international rights. Last I heard, the estate was “making offers,” but they still need New Line on board or a deal with another domestic distributor to move forward with a new film.
