‘A Goofy Movie’ Concept Art Pulls Back the Curtain on One of Disney’s Best Films [Exclusive]

A crazy film may not have received the greatest fanfare when it debuted in 1995, but 30 years later it’s fondly remembered as a fan-favorite classic, and for good reason. What could have been an easy way to cash in on The Disney Afternoon’s success Troop of Dingoes has become one of Disney’s funniest, most moving, and most relatable films, with a poignant father-son story at its heart. To celebrate the occasion ahead of the A Goofy Movie: From Script to Storyreels panel at the upcoming Lightbox Expo, original director Kevin Lima has exclusively shared concept art and behind-the-scenes footage from the remarkable feature film with Collider, some of which has never been seen before.

The new images and artwork offer a behind-the-scenes look at some of the A crazy filmthe most memorable and iconic moments, as a full-color illustration by David Warter representing Max (Jason Marsden) and Goofy (Bill Farmer) heart to heart while floating on the river. There are even concept art depicting the character of Chad (Joey Laurent), who initially had a much larger role in the film as part of an abandoned love triangle consisting of him, Max and Roxanne (Kelly Martin). Additionally, some “zany” behind-the-scenes photos from the film’s production offices make it seem like the film was just as much fun to make as it was to watch.

The road to making a “zany film”

The way to get A crazy film the work was long and, as told in the wonderful documentary Not just a blunderAdapting Goofy to the big screen has been difficult, as opposed to its animated TV show. When we had the opportunity to speak to Kevin Lima about A crazy filmdevelopment, he was quick to point out that one of the most important things to do was to justify A crazy filmexistence by giving Troop of Dingoesthe characters of a place to “grow up”:

For me, it was really about how do we continue the story and how do we tell it in this different format? Time-wise, when you’re telling a longer story, you have to find ways to create drama that you don’t necessarily need in a 22-minute series. So it was really about how do we take the next step and how does that develop? And Max was the way to do that, I thought. He can grow. We can take it from middle school to high school, and in that you can start to take on some of the drama of what it means to be in high school and what it means to be a high school student, an older kid who wants to break away from his parents and create his own identity. These were things we could handle if we were a little older, which allowed us to evolve the narrative, which then allowed us to become more deeply invested in the characters.”

Kevin Lima will be joined by writers Jymn Magon And Brian Pimental, as well as storyboard artists Steve Moore And Chris Urie, to celebrate more A crazy film‘s during their panel at the Lightbox Expo in Pasadena, CA on Sunday, October 26, 2025. There are many other deals on display at the annual celebration of all things art and entertainment, including a sing-along screening and Q&A for the Netflix mega-hit KPop Demon Hunters, as well as several panels discussing costumes and concept art Wicked.
