Trump says he could deploy the National Guard for the Olympic Games in 2028

President Trump said on Tuesday that he could call the national guard or soldiers to carry out security operations at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Trump made these comments after signing a decree that establishes a White House working group to supervise security questions for games. He appointed himself president of the working group and vice-president JD Vance the vice-president.
“We will do everything necessary to ensure the safety of the Olympic Games, in particular by using our National Guard or our Military,” said Trump. “I will use the National Guard or the military – it will be so sure – if we owe it. You have a mayor who is not very competent. ”
In June, Trump ordered around 5,000 soldiers of the National Guard in Los Angeles in response to demonstrations against the application of the Immigration Act – despite the opposition of Governor Gavin Newsom and Mayor Karen Bass. Almost all have since been removed.
Local officials hope for a relatively cooperative relationship with the federal government in setting up games. The mention by Trump of the National Guard has approached one of the many painful points in this relationship in recent months.
During the press conference, he also alluded to Eaton palisades and fires, leading to a familiar riff on California water policy and the Delta Smelt.
Trump was joined by Casey Wasserman, the president of La28, who thanked the president for his efforts and presented him with a set of three Olympic medals of the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
“Can I say that I won them athletic?” The president joked.
Trump presented Wasserman as “one of my friends for a long time” and recalled that he was president when Los Angeles was chosen for the Games in 2017.
“The is a little different place from that when it was selected,” said Trump. “But we are going to bring him back stronger than ever.”
In the executive decree, Trump committed the federal government to “unified effort to ensure maximum security, secure borders and world class transport for millions of visitors” during the games.
Trump also referred to his move to prevent Trans from participating in female sports.
“The United States will not let men steal from women’s trophies at the 2028 Olympic Games,” he said.
In the 1990s, President Clinton created a White House working group to help with the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. Security was also a major concern for the federal government the last time the United States hosted the Games in Salt Lake City in 2002, a few months after the September 11 attacks.
