A return date for Lionel Messi in the Inter Miami range is uncertain, but the Herons announced Sunday that the right leg injury of the superstar is not serious.

Messi got out of the Miami league match against Necaxa on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, at the 11th minute, shortly after being injured in a collision with two opponents.

After Messi underwent medical tests, the team published a statement on Sunday that read, in part, “the results confirmed a minor muscle injury to his right leg. His medical authorization will depend on his clinical progress and his response to treatment”.

In the absence of Messi, Inter Miami joined late to equalize the match at 2-2, then prevailed 5-4 in a penalty shootout.

Through two cutting matches, Miami is in second place in the MLS ranking with a victory in the regulation and a shooting victory, good for five points. The first four of the 18 MLS clubs in the competition will go to the quarterfinals, where they will be joined by the first four of the 18 Liga MX clubs of the tournament.

The herons conclude the group’s phase with a home match Wednesday in Pumas Unam.

Inter Miami resumed the action of the regular MLS season on August 10 in Orlando City.

Messi, 38, has 18 goals in the regular season this year, tied for the head of the MLS with Sam Surridge of Nashville SC. In the cup leagues, he helped the two goals from Miami during a 2-1 opening victory against Atlas on Wednesday.

Eight times the winner of the Ballon d’Or and champion of the World Cup in 2022 with Argentina, Messi is in his third season with Inter Miami.
