One of the first Hulu shows was a western comedy created by a star trek star

“Star Trek: Voyager” presented Samantha Wildman from Nancy Hower in the fourth episode of the second season of the show, “Elogium” (which was broadcast for the first time in 1995). Described as an expert in xenobiology during her introduction, the character was appointed according to Samantha Wildman, a real young girl who, after having died in a tragic accident, had donated wild organs to the woman of the co-editor Jimmy Diggs. The character of Hower would continue to give birth to his daughter, Naomi, in the 1996 episode “Deadlock”, which was a dramatic ride to “travel”. Recall that the premise of the series was that the USS travel was lost in space, 70 years from the earth. This meant that Wildman’s daughter – who was half human and half of the Ktarian – should be raised in space.

Naomi was the one who ended up playing a major role in the series (as a young girl, Naomi was represented by Scarlett Pomers), while Samantha appeared only in eight episodes in total. Nor did she have much character arc, except that she had to balance it is a parent with a Starfleet officer. After the second season of “traveling”, she only appeared once a season, throughout season 6.

Hower, on the other hand, would continue to have a much more fascinating career outside the “Star Trek” franchise, mainly in the music industry. For example, she was the frontwoman and songwriter of the alternatives Wench and Stella, even opening once for Meat Loaf. She also played Yitzak in a production in 2001 of the famous rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” and wrote several musicals and independent films in the early 2000s (with her credits, including “The Wizard of Id”, “City Limits”, and the biopic “Memron”), in addition to creating the Sketch Comedy Series series. “Traveling” was a visible concert for Hower, but she has always been busy.

Then, in 2013, Hower joined the actor John Lehr to create “Quick Draw”, a television series Comedy / Western which incorporated a lot of improvisation to start. Fun Trivia: “Quick Draw” was also the first series of original scripted comedy and full length distributed by Hulu.

What is Hulu’s rapid draw?

“Quick Draw” was cut off from the same fabric as western / comedy programs in the era of the 1990s like “Legend”, “Jack of All Trades” and “The Adventures of Brisco Country, Jr.” His main character was the sheriff John Henry Hoyle (Lehr), a recent graduate of Harvard who moved to the small western town of Great Bend, Kansas, to become the sheriff. Hoyle is a boy in the city, unusual to the savages of Kansas, and he presents to the inhabitants the idea of criminalic in the hope of using science to capture dangerous rustle.

With a premise like this, “Quick Draw” could have been a serious historical investigation program, but Hower and Lehr opted for a large comedy. The character of Hoyle was whining and silly, and everyone in town hated him. The language of the series was modern and familiar, and a large part of its humor was derived from Lehr’s comic social awkwardness. As the slogan of the show said, “you need a brave man to be so ignorant.”

The series worked, perhaps surprisingly, for more than only one season. Remember that Disney had not yet acquired majority participation in Hulu in 2013 (this would only happen in 2019), and it spread for the first time. He even announced “Quick Draw” and a second original series, “The Awesomes”, at the same time. Although it is not a hit of “Ted Lasso”, “Quick Draw” was the program in which Hulu chose to invest, allowing him to run 18 episodes during his two seasons.

“Quick Draw” also broadcast eight “additional mid-season webisodes”, which were published exclusively online and were simple mixology classics organized by Lehr and a real bartender named Lavinia Webb. Mixology episodes taught the spectator how to create real 19th century cocktails. Lehr tried to joke with webb, but she wouldn’t have.

“Quick Draw” jumped waves in October 2014, instantly becoming a quirk in the Hulu library. We remember that few Hulu shows published in the early 2010s, finally becoming victims of streaming and weak advertising ambitions. Meanwhile, Hower put the pen in his cap and continued to work.
