After Superman, it’s time to bring Batman by Robert Pattinson to James Gunn’s DCU

“Superman” is there. The continuous performance of the film’s box office will be essential to determine how much it is a success, but so far, things are improving. If “Superman” continues to skyrocket as he did the opening weekend, then this DC universe thing could really work!
But the complication of this premise has always been Batman. “The Batman” by Matt Reeves was a critical success (just read / own film criticism) and obtained a solid crude office at the box office ($ 772 million), so you don’t just want to throw this. But Reeves’ intention for a Batman trilogy featuring Robert Pattinson, with the freedom of creation to make the films he wants, prior to James Gunn and the DC studios of Peter Safran. You cannot have a DC universe without Batman!
Until now, the line has been that “Batman Epic Crime Saga” by Reeves goes ahead, but as a thing, completed with the DCU. Reeves and Co-Scenarist Mattson Tomlin recently finished their script for the rest of “The Batman”, a Warner Bros. script. would be “delighted with”. Meanwhile, one of the first DCU projects that Gunn and Safran announced was another Batman film, “The Brave and the Bold”, to be directed by Andy Muschietti. But after “Superman”, I am convinced more than ever, they should cut the knot and have only one Batman: Robert Pattinson.
I understand why not everyone is down for that. “The Batman” is so great because it is a complete vision, almost without compromise. The film is alone, more anxious to explore the inner world of Batman than to build a “common universe” around him. Putting the adjustment under the largest DC umbrella may dilute it; The DCU would probably benefit from including Pattinson-Batman more than the reverse.
If I sit in the siege of James Gunn, however, it seems much safer to use the people of Batman already than to try to have two distinct Batman actors at the same time. Fans are crying now for David Corenswet’s Superman to meet Batman de Pattinson. In this rare case, I think the best decision is to give people what they want.
Batman and Superman should contrast
The main reason why many say that “the Batman” and “Superman” should not meet is that the films could not be more distant from tone. “Superman” is a pleasure of gay crowd filled with great Science fiction of the age of soft money, from pocket universes to Kaiju via evil clones and more. “The Batman” is a mystery of a dark and filthy serial killer with a Batman who blocks Nirvana.
“Superman” also establishes that metahumans have long existed in the DC universe, while “the Batman” follows in semi-realism drawn by “The Dark Knight” by Christopher Nolan. Gotham City of Reeves has all the stripped fantasy and seems to be in a world where Batman is the only fighter in masked crime.
But all indicate From Superman meeting Batman, it is how they and their worlds contrast with each other. Superman smiles, Batman frowns. Superman is dressed in bright colors, Batman remains in darkness. They are both idealist men, but Superman looks at the side of hope for this, while Batman is very “confidence but checks”. Superman is a divine extraterrestrial who chooses to be human, and Batman is a normal man who happens in front of the impossible. In Metropolis, the sun never seems to bed, and in the city of Gotham, it never seems to rise.
One of the reasons why “Batman v. Superman” by Zack Snyder fell flat is that in this film, there was No contrast between the two heroes. Batman (Ben Affleck) and Superman (Henry Cavill) were stoic, silent and brooding, and therefore too similar to be leaves. While the Superman Aw-Shucks courageous from Corenswet is light years from Batman withdrawn from Pattinson, Grungy, which creates more The opportunities for them to play each other.
The DCU of James Gunn will embrace the tonal inconsistency
Unlike the tonal homogeneity of the Marvel cinematographic universe, Gunn declared (in an interview with IGN), the DCU films will work like the comics of DC, that is to say different tones according to what the artists make them want to do. The different niches of the DC universe do not always have the impression of adapting, because the great heroes have all been created by different people and not intended to freeze. Batman illustrates all this. The Batman who leaves in dark and violent adventures like “The Cult” by Jim Starlin and Bernie Wrightson is the same Batman who presents himself each week to help the justice League to fight colorful extraterrestrial invaders.
But I find it hard to think that it is a bad thing. Let the filmmakers tell the best possible stories and do not limit them to a uniform aesthetic; Gunn’s attitude gives the impression that Reeves would not be completely Losing freedom of creation if they brought back his Batman. There is also the fact that Canon in the DCU is Already coward. To explain the characters of the cannon of the extended universe of Gunn DC, “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker”, explained Gunn (in an article in 2023 on the wires):
“Some actors will play characters they have played in other stories and certain points of the plot could be consistent with the points of the plot of dozens of films, shows and animation projects that have come from DC in the past.”
I say I apply this principle to Pattinson; Use it as Batman from the DCU, it doesn’t matter how vague you have to keep continuity. Having someone else Batman play at the same time as Pattinson defines this new actor in failure. Pattinson also has enough scope as an actor so that he can be any type of Batman Gunn … So use it.
“Superman” plays in theaters. The rest of “The Batman” is currently scheduled for its release on October 1, 2027.
