Rohl sparks Rangers interest in ‘polarizing’ star

Glasgow Rangers center forward Youssef Chermiti has a lot of work to do to justify the £8million transfer fee Kevin Thelwell agreed to pay Everton for his services this summer.

The Portugal U21 international has scored just two goals in 21 appearances in all competitions for the club so far, which is not enough compared to their most expensive signing in 25 years.

However, his performance against St Mirren on Tuesday night showed promising signs. He provided a brilliant assist for Emmanuel Fernandez’s goal, delivering a perfect cross from the left, and won five of his nine duels, according to Sofascore.

While he still has a long way to go to prove that Gers did not overpay for his services during the summer transfer window, it is a step in the right direction for Chermiti.

Danny Rohl sparks Rangers interest in EFL star

The Light Blues are now reportedly keen to sign a player who could work well alongside the Portuguese centre-forward in the second half of the season.

According to TEAMtalk, Danny Rohl is playing a leading role in recruiting the Scottish Premiership giants in the upcoming January transfer window, and a versatile striker is one of the things on his wishlist.

The report claims that the German head coach is sparking club interest in a deal for Wrexham attacking midfielder Josh Windass, due to his admiration for the former Rangers man.

He adds that the Gers have already had an attempt to loan the former Light Blues striker for the second half of the season, rejected by Wrexham, who do not want to lose their star striker.

TEAMtalk suggests that a deal may not be dead in the water, due to Rohl’s desire to sign him, but it remains to be seen whether or not the club would be willing to strike a permanent deal for the 31-year-old star.

Why the Rangers should sign Josh Windass

Signing the 31-year-old striker on a short-term loan may not have been a particularly attractive option, as it would only be a quick fix, but a permanent move for him could be attractive.

Bringing in Windass on a permanent deal, despite his age, could be a good deal for the Gers as he is a player who could make an immediate impact on the pitch, while also being able to then be a good role model for younger players as he enters the latter years of his career.

In the short term, the experienced striker could be perfect for Chermiti as his main position is as a second striker or attacking midfielder who can play behind a main number nine, while still providing a significant goal threat.

Windass currently faces Kieffer Moore, who has a similar build to Chermiti, and has produced seven goals and three assists in the league so far this season, according to Sofascore.

In the 2024/25 campaign, the England forward has scored 13 goals and provided five assists in 44 appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, while being managed by Rohl, meaning he already has a strong working relationship with the Rangers boss.

As you can see in the table above, Windass’ form for Wrexham this season would make him the most prolific and impressive goalscorer in the current Rangers squad.

The England striker, who has been described as a “polarizing” link due to his first spell with the club by writer Kai Watson, would be perfect for Chermiti as he has the quality to provide an instant goal threat in a second striker or attacking midfielder position to offset the number nine’s struggles in front of goal.

Windass could relieve some of the pressure on the £8 million signing’s shoulders by taking to the field as a goalscorer in the Premiership, as his consistency in front of goal would provide the Gers with the goals they currently lack from their attackers.

Chermiti’s two assists in four Premiership starts for Rangers, according to Sofascore, also suggest he could have the creative potential to give Windass scoring chances, which could see them establish an effective partnership high up the pitch.

Lyall-Cameron-Scotland

Rohl could ruthlessly sell Cameron in Rangers transfer for £5m ‘sensation’

Danny Rohl could cash in on Lyall Cameron with a Rangers swoop for that star in the January transfer window.

Therefore, signing the Wrexham star on a permanent deal, if they decide it is the way to go, could be a good deal for the Scottish giants.
