James Cameron Promises If Final Avatar Sequels Don’t Happen, He Will Do It to Reveal Plot Details

Disney may have already set release dates for the fourth and fifth installments of the “Avatar” franchise in 2029 and 2031, but James Cameron has a contingency plan in case they don’t land in theaters.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly this month, Cameron said: “I don’t know if the saga goes beyond that point. I hope it does. But, you know, we prove that business case every time we come out.”

“Here’s what it is,” he continued. “If we can’t do 4 and 5, for whatever reason, I’ll hold a press conference and tell you what we were going to do. How’s that going?”

Cameron also admitted that he would love to tell the remaining Avatar stories via novels – but “there’s no business model for that anymore. People don’t read.”

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” has enjoyed Christmas box office success since its release on December 19. The film has so far grossed at least $240 million, including $22.6 million in second Friday revenue.
