Ultra-low-cost carrier Avelo this week launched the only nonstop service between Wilmington, North Carolina, and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.
The route will be operated twice a week on Wednesdays and Saturdays aboard Boeing 737NG aircraft. It is the only international route currently operating from Wilmington, primarily connecting markets in the Northeast, Midwest and Florida.
Punta Cana is one of three Avelo destinations outside the United States, the others being Cancun and Montego Bay, Jamaica. It also serves the city from Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, and Hartford, Connecticut.
Avelo has a crew member and operational base in Wilmington and has been increasing its presence in the region since 2022. The airline now serves 15 destinations from Wilmington, including Washington Dulles, Baltimore, Detroit, Nashville, Tennessee and Orlando, Florida.
