Kate Hudson Breaks Silence By Turning Down Spider-Man’s Mary Jane Role: ‘It Doesn’t Feel Good’

23 years after the release of Sam Raimi SpidermanKate Hudson talks about turning down the role of Mary Jane Watson. The character was played by Kirsten Dunst in the 2002 film, as well as the sequels. Spider-Man 2 (2004) and Spider-Man 3 (2007).
On Watch what’s happening live! with Andy CohenHudson was asked if she really refused to play Mary Jane and if she regretted it. Although she partly wished she had accepted the role and starred in Spidermanshe thinks the right people were in the film after all.
She is also grateful to have filmedThe four feathers (2002) at the time, where she worked and became friends with Heath Ledger. Check out Hudson’s response below:
It’s so funny. When people say these things, it doesn’t feel good to talk about it because the people in the movie are the right people. The circumstances of your life happen as they happen. But yeah, I did, and now that I look back, it’s one of those things where I’m like, “It would have been nice to be in the Spider-Man movie.” But at the same time, I made a film called Four Feathers. I met Heath Ledger, who became a very good friend, and I had an experience I never would have had. So part of me feels like life is unfolding exactly the way it’s supposed to, and I’m grateful for that. But I look at this… it would have been fun to be her.
Cohen points out that if Hudson had accepted the role, she could have starred in several Spiderman movies. She also could have played an iconic character in the years before the Marvel Cinematic Universe began, as superhero films became increasingly popular.
The film Hudson chose to make instead, The four featherswas not a critical or commercial success. It grossed $29.8 million worldwide against a reported budget of $35 million and has a critical score of 41% on Rotten Tomatoes. From How to lose a man in 10 days (2003) to Glass onion: a mystery at daggers drawn (2022), however, many other Kate Hudson films have enjoyed great success since then.
In the years that followed Spider-Man 3other versions of Mary Jane have been projected for the big screen. Shailene Woodley was cast to play her in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), but its scenes were cut. Zendaya plays Michelle “MJ” Jones in the MCU Spiderman movies, Zoe Kravitz voices Mary Jane Parker in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018, and Melissa Sturm reprises the role in Spider-Man: Through the Spider-Verse (2023).
THE Spider-Man: A Whole New Day (2026) cast includes Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, who is rumored to play the MCU version of Mary Jane Watson. While the Tom Holland-directed film has completed production, Sink’s role remains closely under wraps.
As for Hudson’s upcoming projects, his new film Song sung in blue starring Hugh Jackman hits theaters on December 25 and season 2 of his Netflix sports comedy series Running point should be released in 2026.
In 2022, Kate Hudson revealed that she would join the MCU if asked, but she is not attached to any of the franchise’s films or shows. Even without playing Mary Jane in SpidermanHudson has had a solid career.
