Hurricane force winds and extreme snow

ANCHORAGE, AK (Alaska’s News Source) – Hurricane force winds swept through the Mat-Su Valley overnight and more extreme winds are expected through Saturday and Sunday.
A Weather First Day Warning has been issued for today and tomorrow morning for the Mat-Su, as winds up to 84 miles per hour were recorded in Palmer and up to 75 miles per hour in Wasilla. These winds caused widespread power outages across the mid-South and will remain a threat through Sunday. A high wind warning will remain over the Mat-Su until Monday afternoon, while Anchorage through Kenai will remain under a high wind advisory until Monday afternoon.
Southeast Alaska is already feeling the effects of heavy snowfall after Haines recorded 9 inches of snow this afternoon. Sunday and Monday are early weather alert days for Juneau, as heavy portions of snow begin to transition from rain early Sunday morning. Other areas, like Haines, have seen significant snow accumulation, and even more is expected in the area starting this evening.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for eastern Chichagof Island Saturday evening through Sunday evening with 10 to 13 inches of snow possible coupled with wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour. Another winter storm warning is in effect from Juneau to Gustavus until midnight Monday, as 13 to 24 inches of snow is expected to accumulate by the end of the weekend. Skagway and Haines are under a winter storm warning through Sunday afternoon due to snow accumulation of 15 to 20 inches. Yakutat will remain under a winter storm warning overnight with 2 to 4 inches of snow expected.
Inland and on the North Slope, clear skies and dry conditions are expected through the weekend. Today, although the sun is a joke, it is offset by high temperatures of 20 to 30 degrees below zero throughout the region. With temperatures like this, the wind chill reaches 50 to 60 degrees below zero, meaning frostbite can take as little as 5 minutes.
Western Alaska is also bright and sunny through Sunday with a blizzard warning and high wind advisories from the Kuskokwim Delta, Nunivak Island and up to Bethel. These alerts are in effect through Monday afternoon with winds likely to reach 60 miles per hour and a wind chill of 35 degrees below zero. Frostbite can occur in as little as 10 minutes with wind chill and temperatures like these, so be careful when outside.
The Aleutian Range is under a gale warning through tonight with possible gusts up to 60 miles per hour. High temperatures will remain in the mid to upper 20s through the work week, with a wintry mix and snow likely in the more central islands.
