Shakur Stevenson Disagrees with Isaac Cruz vs. Lamont Roach Jr Draw: ‘He Succeeded’

Former WBA super featherweight champion Lamont Roach suffered the third draw of his career last night after being held by Isaac Cruz.

The 30-year-old’s first came in 2018 after a dismal encounter with Orlando Cruz, a fight many thought Roach deserved to win. Then, in March of this year, he was unlucky again not to beat superstar Gervonta Davis.

Roach entered his third weight class last night, taking on Mexican marauder Cruz over 12 rounds in the PBC main event at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.

In the third session, Roach landed, giving Cruz the upper hand in the round, but the 27-year-old was deducted a point in the seventh for an illegal hit.

Judges Nathan Palmer and Cory A. Santos both scored it 113-113, while Chris Tellez returned a 115-111 card for Cruz who retained his WBC Interim welterweight belt.

In the three draws in his career, Roach has only received victory from one of the nine judges who scored the fights of Orlando Cruz, Davis and Isaac Cruz.

Roach appeared to have done enough to win, although former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr felt Cruz had outpointed him. Shakur Stevenson, who aims to become a four-weight world champion when he moves up to 140 pounds for his next fight next month against WBO titleholder Teofimo Lopez, also spoke. The 28-year-old posted his reaction to X, saying:

“I thought Lamont nailed that too.”

Roach later expressed his frustration, but remains in line for major opportunities next year – including a potential rematch against “Pitbull” Cruz.
