James Gunn and Peter Safran speak to Warner Bros.’ Sale to Netflix, their contracts being extended until 2027

The big question on comic book fans’ minds regarding the sale of Warner Bros. Discovery is: What will happen to DC Studios? There has been much speculation about the future of the company, led by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Shortly after Warner Bros. began responding to Paramount’s offers and officially putting itself up for sale, Gunn appeared to consider a possible exit from the company.
Now both Superman The director and Safran discussed the company’s sales process, providing a clearer picture of where they stand in relation to the current transaction. Bloomberg profiled the heads of DC Studios and their work creating the DCU. The article revealed that Gunn and Safran’s contracts expire in spring 2027. When they were initially announced as co-CEOs of DC Studios in 2022, The Hollywood Reporter said their contracts were for four years, meaning they ended around October 2026. This seems to confirm that their contracts were extended by a few months.
Such an expansion is not surprising, given that Warner Bros. CEO Discovery’s David Zaslav had nothing but praise for Gunn and Safran during his interview with Bloomberg. The CEO said: “James and Peter’s work, their creative vision, is compelling and represents a great economic return. We have no storytelling content that offers a greater palette than DC, and no one currently can tell these stories with the same imagination and enthusiasm.
Now the sale of Warner Bros. Would Discovery at Netflix have an impact on the mandate of the studio’s executives? According to Bloomberg, none of them are “let the activities of big business change their plans.”Instead, they focus on providing the best scripts possible. During mergers and acquisitions, jobs tend to move around or disappear altogether. However, the duo does not seem worried about the future.
According to Peter Safran, James Gunn’s creative spirit gives them job security: “What truly makes us irreplaceable is the spirit of James Gunn. He was the architect of this great vision.” THE Superman The director then offered a shorter version of the sentiment shared by Safran, stating: “If you’re going to make a Batman movie, it better be great.”
Apparently addressing Netflix’s deal to buy Warner Bros. Discovery’s James Gunn said theatrical releases are “incredibly important” to the studio’s output: “The community theater experience is something incredibly important and remarkably well suited to our major theatrical films.”
Bloomberg further stated that Gunn and Safran’s biggest success at the comic book giant was the synergy they brought to films, comics and games. It’s difficult to gauge how their positions at DC Studios might be affected, if at all, given WBD’s new sale announcement. However, things seem to be looking good for studio executives. Following the sale announcement, YouTube’s John Campea The John Campea Showsaid he contacted a source regarding Gunn and Safran’s future at the company:
“What they are clear about is that [Michael] DeLuca, co-chairman of Warner Bros. Movies, rest. Pam Abdy, also co-chairman of Warner Bros. Movies, rest. […] And then, of course, James Gunn. James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios, remains, leading the creation of the DC Universe. » According to Campea, however, his source was not as clear on the fate of Peter Safran: “What he said to me about Peter Safran was, ‘I’m not sure, but I think it’s a bit assumed.'”
The next part of the DCU, Supergirlwill be released in theaters on June 26, 2026.
