Miles Teller Talks FANTASTIC FOUR Failure, Says There Was One Important Person Who ‘Fucked Everything’

There’s No Way to Sweeten It: 2015 Fantastic Four was a disaster. Once the hopeful start of a franchise for Marvel’s First Family, the film was plagued by production issues and suffered from a poor marketing campaign. Upon his release, Fantastic Four has become a pariah in the comic book genre.
The Josh Trank-directed feature earned a 9% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $167 million worldwide against a reported budget of $120 million – a catastrophic result for a film released the same year as Avengers: Age of Ultron And Ant Man.
Now, Miles Teller, who played Reed Richards in the ill-fated adaptation, has spoken out about the project. Talk to SiriusXMhis past foray into the superhero genre has been discussed. The actor was asked if, during the filming of the film, the Fantastic Four the casting was aware of the poor quality of the project. In response, The spectacular now The star called the whole affair “unfortunate” and pointed the finger at an unnamed individual he considers responsible for the film’s failure:
“I think it’s unfortunate for that, because so many people worked so hard on this movie. And honestly, maybe there was one really important person who screwed it up. Yeah.”
Additionally, the actor said part of his motivation for joining the project was to establish himself as a leading man: “But no, […] especially as a young actor, at that time, it was like, “All right, if you want to be taken seriously as a lead actor, you need to get on this superhero train.” And that was our chance, and the casting, I thought, was spectacular. I love all these actors.”
Teller then revealed that after watching Fantastic Fourhe addresses a studio director and expresses his concerns about the fate of the project: “When I first saw the movie, I remember talking to one of the studio executives and I said, ‘I think we’re in trouble.'”
Although Teller didn’t name names, the “important person” he’s referring to could be the film’s aforementioned director, Josh Trank. It was widely speculated and reported that Trank did not get along with Teller. Their reported animosity got to a point where the two reportedly almost came to blows on set. Entertainment Weekly (via Comicbook.com), for example, reported that:
“On the set, Trank was allegedly abusive and insulting to the crew and actors. The studio did not want Whiplash star Teller, but Trank had fought for him. Then he almost got into a fight with Teller, who has a reputation for sarcasm and recalcitrance at work. At one point, the conflict almost became physical, with Trank and Teller, chest to chest, daring each other to throw the first punch. Neither.”
EW also reported that Trank didn’t want to cast Kate Mara as Sue Storm, but Fox insisted he do it. In response, Trank reportedly expressed his frustrations on the House of Cards actress. According to the point of sale: “Sources say his interactions with her ranged from cold to cruel at times.” During a 2020 interview with Emmy MagazineMara herself would go on to call out her experience on film “horrible.”
The director also tweeted that he had made a “fantastic” version of the film that no one would be able to see: “A year ago I had a fantastic version of it. And it would have gotten great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. But that’s the reality.” The message spread quickly on the Internet, to the point would have cost Fantastic Four between $5 million and $10 million in ticket sales.
