Kroos backs Guler to lead Real Madrid to golden period

Toni Kroos has praised Real Madrid midfielder Arda Guler for his development this season, saying he is happy to see the young Turk getting more first-team opportunities.

The retired German is backing the 20-year-old to make a huge impact in the Spanish capital as he continues to grow.

Speaking to Sport1 at an Icon League event in Germany, the former Real Madrid midfielder spoke about Guler’s progress and life since stepping away from professional football.

“I’m happy that he’s getting a lot more minutes this year, because he’s earned it with his footballing ability and he’s a player you can count on for the future,” Kroos said.

When asked if Guler could be considered his replacement at the Bernabeu, Kroos rejected the comparison.

“He’s a different type of player to me. His best position is clearly more offensive than mine, so he’s not my successor at all.

“But overall I’m happy for him because he’s a good boy. I was still able to play with him. He has a very nice touch, which he has already used very effectively with Madrid this season.

“That’s why I hope he continues to have consistent playing time, because that’s the only way he can improve. And I’m sure he can leave his mark in Madrid for many years to come.”

Guler has started playing more regularly for Xabi Alonso’s side after injuries limited his involvement last season under Carlo Ancelotti.

Kroos, who retired last year after winning another Champions League title with Madrid, also spoke about his life off the field.

“It’s not because I have less news that I’m inactive. There’s a lot going on. I work daily at my academy in Madrid, where I personally coach two teams.

“My foundation also celebrated its tenth anniversary with a big event in Düsseldorf, which I was able to combine perfectly with the Icon League,” he said.

The 34-year-old remains one of Madrid’s most successful players, with five Champions League titles to his name.
