AltoVolo unveils the world’s first eVTOL configurator for Sigma aircraft

The dream of personal flight has always seemed out of reach, until now. A company called AltoVolo has unveiled something that could make it real: the world’s first eVTOL configurator.

This may sound technical, but it’s actually simple. “eVTOL” stands for electric vertical takeoff and landing. Think of a small, quiet plane that takes off like a helicopter but flies forward like an airplane, all powered by electric or hybrid motors instead of noisy fuel-burning engines.

And a configurator? It is a tool that allows you to design your own version online, choosing colors, materials and other personal details. Put the two together and you get something pretty remarkable: the ability to design your own flying vehicle from your laptop.

A new type of personal plane

AltoVolo’s plane is called Sigma and is unlike anything else on the market. It is a three-seater hybrid-electric vehicle that combines quiet operation and long range. The Sigma can travel approximately 500 miles, reach speeds in excess of 220 mph and is more than 80 percent quieter than a helicopter.

This tranquility is not just a matter of comfort; this is what makes urban air transport possible. Imagine small planes taking off quietly from rooftops or fields, connecting towns and villages without the noise pollution we associate with helicopters today.

Security is also integrated. The Sigma can continue flying even if one of its small electric jet engines fails, and it is equipped with a ballistic parachute in case of emergency. It’s compact and lightweight, measuring just under 16 feet wide and weighing just over 2,100 pounds, making it easier to use and store than you might think.

From concept to customization

The idea of customizing your own plane may seem futuristic, but AltoVolo’s online configurator makes it surprisingly accessible.

Like building your own car online, you can choose colors, seat materials, interior details and even the stitching of your seat belts. Founder and CEO Will Wood says the company’s goal is not to compete on price but on experience and technology.

“Just as you would expect from a supercar brand, we focus on performance and refinement,” he explained.

The first 100 Sigma models will be limited editions, offering special finishes and materials that will not appear on subsequent production units.

Taking flight before taking off

AltoVolo doesn’t stop at online design. They built a high-fidelity flight simulator that exactly mirrors the Sigma’s cockpit, right down to its carbon fiber and soft leather interior.

Customers can train on the simulator and even use those hours to obtain a pilot’s license. The simulator gives them the opportunity to “fly” their personalized Sigma before even leaving the ground.

And for everyone? The company shares flight footage from its simulator on YouTube so people can see how the Sigma performs in the air.

“For AltoVolo, opening our order book is a major step in achieving Sigma,” Wood told CyberGuy. “Having the first customers financially committing shows us real demand. In return, we are able to raise capital to finalize the product, progress certification and prepare for production. The flight simulator presentation was a useful catalyst. Allowing customers to fly in a simulated environment really helps them realize how easy this type of aircraft will be to fly.”

Innovation you can feel

One of the most interesting details of the Sigma is something you can’t see: the sound inside the cabin. AltoVolo engineers work to reduce vibration and interior noise, creating a calm and smooth flight experience.

At the same time, they experience a synthesized soundscape, a soft background tone that changes depending on the plane’s power consumption. It helps pilots feel the vehicle’s performance and adds a cinematic touch to the flying experience.

It’s part science, part art, and a clue to how human-centered this design really is.

The path to certification

The Sigma will benefit from new U.S. aviation rules called MOSAIC, which simplify the certification process for small, advanced aircraft. This means the Sigma can be sold as a light sport aircraft, reducing costs for the company and future pilots. Certification is also underway in Europe and the UK, which could enable global operations in the coming years.

Building a community around flying

Buying a Sigma isn’t just about owning an airplane; it’s about joining a new type of community. AltoVolo wants Sigma owners to become collaborators, helping to shape the product and the future of urban flight. The company also plans a global service and support network, including maintenance and training centers, to make ownership convenient for people beyond traditional aviation circles.

What does this mean for you

For most of us, flying still means boarding a large plane in a crowded airport. But companies like AltoVolo are trying to change that. The Sigma represents a future in which small, efficient aircraft could provide regional travel, connecting towns, suburbs and cities in new ways. It’s the kind of innovation that could one day make air travel as personal as driving a car. And while it’s still very early, AltoVolo’s new configurator makes the dream of personal air travel a little more real.
