An adapter that actually works

I love my beat up old Toyota Tacoma truck, but the upgraded stereo still doesn’t support wireless Android Auto. Unless you have a newer vehicle, yours probably doesn’t either. After trying several different dongles to convert it to a wireless experience, I can confidently say that the AAWireless TWO is the only one worth buying.

Pricing and availability

The AAWireless TWO costs $65 and is often on sale for around $55. It can be purchased directly from AAWireless or on Amazon. As the name suggests, it is only designed to work with Android Auto. However, there is a new AAWireless TWO+ that also supports CarPlay.

Design and features

The AAWireless TWO is a small, discreet rectangular dongle that you can insert into the glove box or center console of your vehicle. It’s about the same size as a fun-sized Snickers bar and has a USB-C port for power, an LED ring for connectivity alerts, and a button for easily pairing or swapping between phones.

That’s all there is in this little device, and all the magic happens inside. Plug it into your vehicle’s USB-A port or an aftermarket stereo’s USB cable, press and hold its multifunction button to initiate pairing mode, then go to your phone’s Bluetooth settings and connect to the dongle.

Once you’ve paired your phone to the dongle, you’re ready to go. Your infotainment screen will quickly launch Android Auto and every time you get in the car it will automatically pair to the adapter and launch Android Auto wirelessly. It’s a little slower than a wired connection, but the trade-off is worth it.

A solid connection that always works and a useful companion app

What makes the AAWireless TWO the best Android Auto adapter is its reliability. This little device has a solid connection, and after three months of use, I have yet to experience any issues. The connection has never been lost, my music plays without any lag, and the turn-by-turn directions using Google Maps work great. I have no complaints about the AAWireless TWO.

Speaking of connecting, one of the TWO’s big advantages over other adapters is that you can pair multiple phones and switch between them on the fly. So if your partner wants to DJ, once paired you can easily switch between paired devices on your infotainment screen.

The pairing process is much better than Motorola or any other adapter. The LED indicator ring around the button makes it easy to know if the dongle is on, connected or in pairing mode with blue and green lights. Then, tap the button (or open the app) to switch between phones. It’s that simple.

So what made me buy it? Well, I’ve tried three other dongles, and they’re all terrible. The only high-profile Android Auto wireless adapter is the Motorola MA1, released in 2022. It’s more expensive than the AAWireless TWO and harder to pair.

I only had problems with the Motorola dongle. In fact, every time I left the house, the Motorola MA1 would lose connection at least once, if not several times, during the drive. It is extremely unreliable. Having Android Auto disappear in the middle of a busy highway while trying to follow directions isn’t ideal. I also tried two random no-name dongles from Amazon with a similar experience.

I quickly realized that Motorola’s MA1 dongle wasn’t worth using, so I purchased the AAWireless TWO and haven’t looked back. If you want wireless Android Auto in your vehicle, the only one I’ve actually enjoyed using is this AAWireless TWO.

Additionally, you can download the AAWireless companion app to check for updates, take advantage of additional controls or settings, and add multiple phones for a sibling, spouse, or friend. If you pair multiple phones with AAWireless TWO, use the app to set which phone has priority. This way, when you are both in the car, your favorite phone will be used by default.

Basically, AAWireless has thought of everything here. There’s not much to this little device, but all aspects work and work well. This is something I can’t say about other options on the market.

Should you buy the AAWireless TWO?

My only complaints about the AAWireless TWO are that it doesn’t work with CarPlay and by using it, drivers will have one less USB port in the vehicle. That said, I use a multiport charger in the DV cigarette lighter, so it’s not a problem. And if you want that same dongle with Android Auto and CarPlay support, get the new AAWireless TWO+.

So, should you buy this little gadget? Absolutely. If you have an older vehicle or even a newer model that only offers wired Android Auto, this is the best and easiest way to upgrade your car. Nothing else I’ve tried comes close to the ease of use and reliability of this Android Auto adapter. The new TWO+ is the same price and should be just as good, but I haven’t tried it, so I think the standard TWO is the better way to go if you’re using Android.
