This Fast Food Chain Offers $1 Meals in Southern California Amid Government Shutdown: Find Out Where

LOS ANGELES – Carl’s Jr. is offering a $1 meal deal to those affected by the federal government shutdown.

What we know:

The special meal includes a children’s burger, a small fries and a children’s drink.

This effort is led by Akash Management LLC, a local Carl’s Jr. franchise group that owns and operates restaurants throughout Southern California.

The $1 meal deal is available at select Carl’s Jr. locations in Los Angeles County, Orange County, Ventura County and the Inland Empire while supplies last.

To obtain the $1 meal, customers must present a federal employee ID, military ID or valid SNAP/EBT card at the counter or drive-thru.

The backstory:

The U.S. government shutdown continues, as Republican and Democratic lawmakers in Congress are no closer to ending their budget impasse.

This means that many, but not all, U.S. government services are temporarily suspended, and approximately 1.4 million federal employees are on unpaid leave or working without pay.

The 42 million Americans who receive SNAP benefits are also caught in the crossfire. The Agriculture Department planned to withhold $8 billion needed for food program payments starting Saturday until two federal judges order the administration to fund it.

The Trump administration indicated in court Monday that it would only partially fund SNAP this month using a $4.65 billion emergency fund. That left the program in limbo, with no clear indication of how much recipients will receive or when their cards will be loaded for groceries.

About 1 in 8 U.S. residents receive an average of $187 per month per person through SNAP. Nearly 39% of beneficiaries are children and adolescents under 18 years old, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
