RRR Director’s First Franchise Has a Spider-Verse-Style Spinoff That Looks Incredible (Trailer)

Three years after director SS Rajamouli brought the spectacle and drama of “RRR” to American shores and the hallowed halls of the Oscars, the Indian filmmaker is ready to do it all again – this time, through his new franchise that has already taken the world by storm. As we’ve written before on /Film, his two-part films “Baahubali” represent some of the most epic tales that international cinema has to offer. Years before honing his craft with “RRR,” Rajamouli had already distilled his talents as a myth-maker and wonder-maker with this saga about a man named Mahendra Baahubali (played by Indian star and powerhouse Prabhas) raised in total anonymity, until he discovered his true lineage as a prince destined for greatness.
The two Telugu-language blockbusters would — no exaggeration — reshape the face of the Indian film industry as a whole, but even that success may pale in comparison to the future of the “Baahubali” franchise. News recently broke of a spin-off film based on the popular films, as Rajamouli took it upon himself to re-edit and re-edit both halves of ‘Baahubali’ into a gargantuan-sized re-imagining aptly titled ‘Baahubali: The Epic’. (Even cooler, he debuted a teaser for the spinoff during intermissions for screenings of “The Epic.”) This sequel will take the live-action story and move it into the realm of animation with a new film called “The Eternal War”…and it looks just as breathtaking and groundbreaking as the previous installments.
Billed as the first in another two-part adventure, “Baahubali: The Eternal War — Part 1” truly must be seen to be believed. Luckily, studio Arka MediaWorks has released a new trailer that showcases all the breathtaking visuals and action. Check it out above!
Baahubali: Forever War seems to be the next step in animation
Do you hear that? It’s the sound of every moviegoer within range of this trailer, collectively lifting their jaws from the floor. Like Netflix’s “Love, Death & Robots” series or Sony’s “Spider-Verse” films, “Baahubali: The Eternal War” seems destined to revolutionize the world of animation. Coupled with the wild imagination and grandiose sense of flair found only in Indian cinema, well, it’s not much of a leap to say that this film could end up having a similar “RRR” sized impact on Western moviegoers in general.
Produced by SS Rajamouli, “Baahubali: The Eternal War” comes from director Ishan Shukla (best known for writing and directing a season 2 episode of the animated anthology series “Star Wars: Visions” titled “The Bandits of Golak”) and written by Scott Mosier. If that last name sounds familiar, that’s because you probably know him as the producer behind several Kevin Smith films and co-director of the 2018 animated film “The Grinch.” Of course, Prabhas returns to reprise his original Baahubali role, alongside Ramya Krishna as Sivagami. Although he won’t be taking over the director’s chair this time around, Rajamouli had this to say in an official statement about the prospects of this upcoming spin-off and its planned second part:
“When Ishan approached us with the idea of expanding the ‘Baahubali’ universe into a stylized animated epic, it clicked instantly. It feels like a seamless and organic extension of the world we’ve built, one that will delight longtime fans and invite new audiences. I’m thrilled to bring these two films to the big screen.”
“The Eternal War” is scheduled to be released sometime in 2027, and we can’t wait.
