It’s sort of by default that Patterson is currently starting for Miami.

Why is Riley Patterson the Dolphins kicker?

Patterson is Miami’s kicker because top pick Jason Sanders is injured.

Sanders was initially injured during preseason warmups before their final game in August, injuring his hip.

He was placed on injured reserve with a designation to return, but he has not returned yet.

Patterson has been the kicker in all eight games for the Dolphins thus far.

In those eight games, Patterson has made 11 of 12 field goals. His length is only 47 yards, although during his NFL career he has one kick of 53 yards and four different kicks of 52 yards, so he has a strong leg.

Patterson is also 19-for-19 on extra points this season.

Patterson, 26, has played for six different NFL teams, including three different teams in 2024.

Sanders’ injury gave Patterson some stability, and he was pretty consistent when the Dolphins called on him.

It appears Sanders would get his job back if and when he returns, but for now, it’s still a waiting game, and so Patterson will continue to do his thing.
