WATCH: SUPERMAN Shreyas Iyer takes a superb catch to dismiss Alex Carey and gets injured in the process during 3rd AUS vs IND ODI

Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer delivered a moment of genius mixed with sorrow during the third ODI against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), as he completed a sensational run to dismiss Alex Carey but suffered an injury in the process. The breathtaking moment, dubbed Iyer’s ‘Superman Catch’, quickly went viral on social media, earning widespread praise for his athleticism and courage.

Shreyas Iyer’s stealing effort stuns Sydney crowd

The incredible incident happened in Australia’s 34th innings. Harshit Rana, bowling a back-to-back delivery outside off-stump, forced Carey to take an aerial slice towards the backward point region. Iyer, lined up at full back, reacted in an instant – turning and sprinting for almost 20 yards before launching into a full dive just outside the 30-yard circle. With remarkable timing, he managed to place the ball just inches above the ground, making one of the most memorable catches of the series.

The Sydney crowd rose to its feet as Iyer completed the catch by falling to the ground. Carey’s dismissal for 24 off 37 balls proved crucial as he broke a developing partnership with Matt Renshaw, who anchored Australia’s middle order.

Painful landing leaves Shreyas Iyer in discomfort

However, this outburst came at a painful cost. Once the capture is complete, Iyer landed awkwardly on his left side, his elbow hitting his ribcage and his hip taking the brunt of the fall. He immediately winced in pain and remained motionless for several seconds before the Indian physio and his teammates rushed to his aid.

During the drinks break that followed, Iyer was helped off the field, holding his left hip and stomach. Fox Sports later reported that the injury appeared to be centered around his left hip and abdominal region, although at the time of writing, the BCCI had not released any updates regarding his condition or availability to bat in India’s innings.

India imposes restrictions on Australia for 236

India’s bowling attack delivered an impressive performance in the crucial final overs of the match, ensuring that Australia were bowled out for just 236 in 46.4 overs. This clinical display in the death overs completely extinguished the momentum created by the Australian top and middle orders.

The star of the show was young fast bowler Harshit Rana, who led the demolition job with a brilliant spell, picking up four key wickets. His haul included the scalp of Josh Hazlewood for a duck, underlining the sudden collapse of the lower order.

Picking up regular wickets towards the end of the innings, the Indian bowlers managed to navigate a difficult pitch and provided the batsmen with a highly achievable target of 237. Having already lost the first two matches of the series, this total provides a strong platform for the Men in Blue to go on and secure a vital consolation victory to avoid a series whitewash.
