Newcastle now rush to sign ‘exceptional’ £55m star in secret midfield rebuild

Already eyeing further reinforcements in 2026, Newcastle United are now reportedly racing to sign a £55million star in a bid to build a new midfield partnership.
Sandro Tonali extends his stay at Newcastle
It’s been a good week for Newcastle since they suffered defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion last weekend. Not only did they bounce back in style on the pitch, beating Jose Mourinho’s Benfica 3-0, but they also need to work off the pitch to allay fears over Sandro Tonali’s future.
After holding secret discussions with the Italian, the Magpies extended his contract until 2029 in a deal that also includes the option to extend for a further year. As reported by Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, Tonali made a deal in secret during his ban for illegal betting in a bid to protect Newcastle financially during his absence.
As a reward for the good faith Newcastle showed in him during his ban, Tonali’s contract now runs until 2029. It’s a huge relief for St James’ Park, with concerns starting to grow that they could face a repeat of Alexander Isak before news of the Italian’s new deal emerges.
From now on, all attention will be focused on taking advantage of this new contract on the ground. The 25-year-old is one of the most important players under Eddie Howe and the Magpies will need him at the top of his game as they look to end their frustrating debut in the Premier League.
Additionally, now that his contract has been signed and sealed, the Tyneside locals have reportedly turned their attention to providing the former AC Milan player with an impressive midfield partner.
Newcastle are now rushing to sign Elliot Anderson
As iNews reports, Newcastle are now racing to re-sign Elliot Anderson in a bid to build on their secret deal with Tonali and build an impressive midfield partnership in a low-key manner.
Anderson’s return to the club won’t come cheap, however. After selling the England international to Nottingham Forest in 2024 for around £30m, the Tricky Trees are now reportedly pricing him at £55m.
The midfielder’s return is certainly something Howe would support. The Newcastle boss still regrets having to sell Anderson amid PSR problems and recently took the time to welcome his rise at the City Ground.
“He was probably at a stage where he desperately wanted to play regular football and I couldn’t argue with that kind of thinking. I want all my players to feel that and want that.
“But there was no denying that we saw his ability in him and we knew that Elliot was going to be an exceptional player, so we are very sorry to have lost him.”
At 22, Anderson’s career could still have many twists and turns, including a return to Tyneside after a new midfield partnership with Tonali.
