Las Vegas Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs: Preview, Predictions and Odds

Las Vegas Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs Preview

The Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to improve their winning record for the first time this season when they host their AFC East rivals, the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday.

An uneven start to the season came to a head for the defending AFC champions last Sunday when they posted a 30-17 victory over an NFC contender in the form of the Detroit Lions.

Patrick Mahomes produced his best performance of the season so far, posting a quarterback rating of 132.2 as he completed 73.3 percent of his passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for a touchdown.

Kansas City’s offense has regained the efficiency and explosiveness it lacked even when the Chiefs went all the way to the Super Bowl last season, failing to reach the three-peat, and their offense should get even stronger this week.

Wide receiver Rashee Rice’s suspension is over, giving Mahomes a target who had 938 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his rookie season.

“How many shots he gets, [I don’t know]” head coach Andy Reid said of Rice.

:He’s excited to be back and going again. I think going through the workouts [this week] it will be good for him to get into the swing of things. He worked hard. He is in good shape.

Rice may be rusty, but it’s a soft landing for him to face the opposition for his return.

The Raiders picked up their second win of the season last week against the lowly Tennessee Titans, who subsequently fired head coach Brian Callahan. However, they have one of the least explosive offenses in the NFL and rank 23rd in points per game on defense.

In other words, there’s no indication the Raiders will be able to slow down the Chiefs, especially with quarterback Geno Smith leading the NFL in interceptions (10).

Las Vegas could look to reduce the risk of turnovers by leaning on rookie running back Ashton Jeanty against a Kansas City defense that has struggled to resist the run this season.

Still, with All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers set to miss again with a knee injury, the Raiders having the kind of offensive balance that will be needed to dominate possession and keep Mahomes on the sideline seems an unlikely prospect.

Prediction for Las Vegas Raiders @ Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs’ performance against the Lions served as a warning to the rest of the NFL. It was the type of play that should give them momentum, and with Mahomes playing at an MVP level, they’re expected to have little trouble taking down the Raiders.

Prediction: Las Vegas Raiders 13 – 30 Kansas City Chiefs
