What is the connection between Lewis Capaldi and Niall Horan?

The complicity between the former member of One Direction and the 29-year-old Battle Advisor is real: the two are actually close friends! They have toured together several times, with their friendship dating back to 2017 when Horan contacted Capaldi via social media after hearing his music.

In an interview with Charmboth stars were asked about their connection, with Horan’s description of his first meeting with Capaldi proving particularly authentic.

“The first time I met him I just thought he was crazy, it was St. Patrick’s Day, we had a few beers…and we were really drunk, and then both of them played shows the next day,” Horan confessed. “He’s very funny to be around, he makes me feel funnier, even though I’m not that funny at all, maybe it’s because I’m famous and he’s very interested in famous things these days.”

It turns out that Capaldi always appreciated that Horan believed in his music, even when he was still relatively unknown in the industry.

“Joking aside, before any of my music did everything, he was one of the first to contact me and say he loved my music and that meant a lot to me,” Capaldi admitted.

But that’s not all. The two even starred together in a documentary: The return of Niall Horan: the road to Mullingar with Lewis Capaldireleased on Amazon Prime in 2023.

The film’s synopsis says it all: “What happens when two of the biggest names in music embark on a road trip to Ireland?” A film that captures adventure, friendship, stories and endless laughter. All inspired by Horan’s desire to revisit and reconnect with everything he loves about home; to retrace the origins of the exciting life journey he is undertaking and to discover the reality of today’s Ireland, alongside his best friend, Lewis Capaldi.

During one unforgettable season 24 moment, Horan found himself watching a performer who was actually performing one of Capaldi’s songs for their blind audition.

Eli Ward, 21, sang Capaldi’s song “Bruises” in 2019 and, after briefly tripping at the start of the performance, got a two-chair turn. And even though Horan didn’t turn out for him that day, he couldn’t help but praise Ward for his excellent fashion sense and song selection.

“Eli, there’s some pitching issues, just out of excitement, I’m sure,” Horan told him. “It’s not easy to come here and do what you did and take a song – I covered that song myself with Lewis – you did a really good job on it and you have two amazing coaches ready for you.”

In the end, Ward chose Gwen Stefani as his coach — the same coach who pushed his button so quickly when he started singing that it took him out of his groove for a moment.
