Channing Tatum Says Unmade GAMBIT Movie ‘Had Mutants Having Sex’ and Reveals Why Disney Would Never Make It

After Channing Tatum expressed interest in playing Gambit, X-Men Franchise producer Lauren Shuler Donner wasted no time signing her up to play the character in a solo film.
Several attempts were made to roll cameras on the project, with Rupert Wyatt, Doug Liman and Gore Verbinski all attached to direct at one point or another. However, just as it was starting to take shape, the Disney/Fox merger happened, and Gambit fell into the water.
Ryan Reynolds pushed to give Tatum another chance, and he made his surprise MCU debut as Remy LeBeau in 2024. Deadpool and Wolverine. THE Roofer the star’s portrayal of Gambit was a hit with fans, meaning Avengers: Apocalypse is now the next step for the actor alongside the rest of the X-Men.
While speaking to Variety, Tatum reflected on Deadpool and Wolverine saying, “It was the highest stakes cosplay ever. I looked around and I saw Deadpool, Wolverine, Blade – and I’m standing there in the middle of Gambit. I had this out-of-body kid moment.”
He then claimed that Marvel Studios “has ideas” for the character who advances, adding, “If the fans really want it, I think there is a world where Gambit could finally get his due.” In other words, there’s a chance he’ll continue playing the hero beyond Avengers: Secret Wars.
However, he does not foresee his defeat Gambit the film being one of these potential plans.
“Look, if we had done our Fox version, this script would never have been made, ever. It was an R-rated romantic comedy,” » explained Tatum. “And when I say R-rated, I mean we went for it. We made Gambit the kind of character that could only exist in a Deadpool movie. We had mutants having sex! It was wild, like crazy.”
“It’s something that Marvel and Disney would never do. You don’t always know what Disney will be, but you certainly know what it won’t be. It won’t be horror. It won’t be sex,” he continued. “But I think Marvel needs that kind of tonal diversity, something to balance the other side. Gambit is a great opportunity for that.”
“There’s so much you can do with him, and he’s slowly integrating himself into the Marvel psyche. It’s fascinating, and I think one day they’ll understand.”
Marvel Studios has been open to telling R-rated stories when the story is right, but what’s the demand for any version of Gambit is hard to say in this age of “superhero fatigue.” However, with Reynolds having developed X-Forcethere might be a place for Cajuns there.
