“Very special artist and person”

Keanu Reeves remembers Something has to give co-star Diane Keaton following news of her death on Saturday.

At the premiere of his new film Chance In New York, Reeves reflected on their time together, recounting The Hollywood Reporter“I had the wonderful opportunity to work with her and she was a very special artist and person. Very unique and what a wonderful artist.”

The two starred together in Nancy Meyers’ 2003 romantic comedy, with Keaton playwright Erica Barry juggling the affections of a charming young doctor (Reeves) and a wealthy record label owner (Jack Nicholson). Keaton was nominated for an Oscar for this role, and the pair also reunited as presenters at the 2020 Oscars.

Reeves’ comments come just hours after Meyers paid her own tribute on social media, writing on Instagram after the outpouring of reaction: “As a movie fan, I stand with you all – we have lost a giant. A brilliant actress who put herself forward time and time again to tell our stories. As a woman, I lost a friend of almost 40 years – sometimes in those years she felt like a sister because we shared so many truly memorable experiences. As a female filmmaker, I lost a connection with an actress that one can only dream of.

The filmmaker also specifically referenced Something has to give in her post, remembering, “When I needed her to cry scene after scene in Something has to give, she went hard at it and then somehow she made it funny. And I remember her sometimes spinning in some sort of goofy circle before a take to purposely throw herself off balance or whatever she needed to get rid of so she could be in the moment.

“She was fearless, she was unlike anyone, she was born to be a movie star, her laugh could make your day and for me, knowing her and working with her changed my life,” Meyers continued. “Thank you Di. I will miss you forever.”

AMC Theaters is also bringing back Annie Hall And Something has to give in 100 theaters across the United States in honor of Keaton.
