A basic and beloved sitcom led by a black woman from the UPN, Girlfriends was suddenly canceled by the emerging network of the time, the CW in the midst of the writers’ strike 2007-08 – a decision that designer Mara Brock Akil remembers as “painful”. However, the prolific television producer said that she would be “very open” to review the life of Joan (Tracee Ellis Ross), Maya (Golden Brooks), Toni (Jill Marie Jones), Lynn (Persia White) and their bestie William (Reggie Jones).
The creator behind Netflix Forever spoke to the deadline after his panel conversation during the event by invitation only by day of unreasonable conversation.
“I’m starting to believe that sometimes your greatest pain can be your greatest joy,” said Akil. “It was very painful not to be able to finish the history of these four women and William, but now it is interesting because, at the time, the limits of the network, that would not reach you and other audiences of the world [itself] And find new audiences even in yourself who want more, [who think,] “It’s not enough” and they say to each other: “We want the end.” “”
Akil continued: “It is a long preamble mainly to say that I would be very open at the end of the story in a film. I think it would be very fun, it would be my dream. But he needs good resources and support and good distribution – he needs the right package to be treated like the gem.
Girlfriends ran for eight seasons from 2000 to 2008, focusing the lives of four disparate women at the end of the 20 years living in Los Angeles, tracing their clashes, their relations and the ups and the stockings of their careers. Although the CW initially announced its intention to continue the series after the strike, a few days later, the show was ax, the network claiming that it would be too expensive to resume production for an appropriate standard final. There were additional plans for filming a retrospective episode, but it was also rebuilt.
More recently, Ross and the casting discussed the end without ceremony by a conversation with Charlamagne Tha God, with the Blackish An old old one saying that there was “no closure. We had no party, nothing. ” Jones, who left the show in 2006 when his character moved to New York, revealed that the original plan was “to come back to perhaps four episodes at the end”, although it was never extinguished.
“I do not think that our program was as important for them as for our community,” added Ross, the distribution describing the decision as a “cleaning house”.
Girlfriends Switzerland on Netflix since September 2020, in commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the show. The series has caused fallout The gameWith Tia Mowry, who ran for nine seasons first on the CW and later Bet. Paramount + ordered a renewal / Requel show in 2021, canceling it after two seasons.
