The GOP misled by saying that the Democrats have closed to give health care to “illegal immigrants”
Washington – With the government’s closure, the Republicans center their message on a simple argument: “Democrats stop in America to give illegal free health care immigrants.”
This message, of a new announcement from the National Committee of the Republican Congress, was taken up by the GOP legislators and the Trump administration in recent days.
Vice-president JD Vance said on Fox News that the GOP “Big Beautiful Bill” had disabled health funding for “illegal extraterrestrials”.
“Democrats want to turn him on,” he said. “This is not something we invented. This is not a subject of discussion. It was in the text of the bill that they initially gave us to reopen the government. ”
US law already prohibits unauthorized immigrants from obtaining coverage of health care subsidized by the federal government – through Medicaid, the affordable care law, the health insurance program for children or otherwise. A status of 1996 established this.
The chief of the Hakeem Jeffries House, DN.Y., said the Republicans “lie” on the Democratic Bill of weakness.
“Nowhere have the Democrats suggest that we are interested in changing federal law,” he said before closing. “The question for the president is whether it is interested in protecting the health care of the American people.”

The facts
The republican complaint is very misleading.
The democratic bill would not change the existing law prohibiting people who are illegally in the United States to obtain federal health care coverage.
The dispute focuses on immigrants that the federal government has declared as “legally present”, but which have not officially received legal status which is enforceable in court.
In the United States, around 1.4 million people are considered to be “legally present” in the United States-including beneficiaries of the delayed action program for children’s arrivals, who came to the United States illegally as a child; people who have temporary protected status; And refugees and people looking for asylums who always follow the legal process. Republicans seek to prohibit admissibility in Medicaid or ACA to these groups.
They are not “undocumented” or “illegal” immigrants. The government knows who they are and many go through the process of researching official legal status or green cards. Among other things, it is not illegal border cruisers who have been reported for expulsion.
GOP law has prohibited these “legally present” immigrants from accessing federal health programs. The democratic bill would restore this access – but not for undocumented people who lack protected status – while restaurants the 1 dollars of Medicaid cups, a main objective for Democrats.
The White House defended its claim by designating part of the “Big Beautiful Bill” that Democrats seek to repeal, a section entitled “Alien Medicaid Imissibility”. This section establishes new limitations of access to health care for legally present immigrants (“Alien” is the federal term used to describe a non-citizen).
The White House also indicates that the Biden administration abused the conditional immigration release program to grant temporary entry to the United States for people who should not have received them. But if the Trump administration revoked this conditional release status, these individuals would lose their eligibility for any health coverage within the framework of the democratic proposal.
Another provision in the democratic bill would extend the subsidies that maintain low health insurance premiums for people provided through the affordable care law, which should expire later this year. Undreable immigrants are already prohibited from accessing this money, and nothing in the Department’s bill changes this.
