‘Deep Quiet Room’ takes the first prize at the Pingyao Film Festival

The “Deep Quiet Room” by Taiwanese director Shen Ko-Shang won the first honor at the 9th International Pingyao Film Festival, the Fei Mu Prize for the best film, as well as a cash price of 1 million RMB ($ 137,000).
Half of the prize will support the next Shen project, while the other half will go to the Chinese film distributor. The jury praised the “solid narrative and incisive expression” of the film, noting how “the director brilliantly controls the rhythm and advances the layer of the story by the layer until it reaches its deep nucleus”.
Joseph Chang won the Fei Mu Prix for best actor for his performance in “Deep Quiet Room”, representing a husband navigating on family trauma. The jury highlighted his “nuanced representation” which “exposes the complex transformations of the character at each stage”. The Fei Mu Awards, for emerging filmmakers who make films in Chinese language, are disbursed to selections in the hidden dragons of the festival.
Zhang Zhongchen won the best director of the Fei Mu Awards for “Nighttime Sounds”, the jury noting his trip “From a Guard in a film academy” to “self -taught director” which “composes a poem with its objective”.
Ranice Tay won the prize for the best actress for her role in “Amoeba”, directed by Tan Siyou. The jury described him as playing “a new generation taken in the turbulence of adolescence, where fear coexists with courage”. Tan’s film turned out to be a favorite from the festival, collecting three prizes in total: the best actress, the jury prize for young people and the Cinephilia Critics’ Award Prize. The young jury noted that he presents “the perspective of young people, through which we can both see their situation and enhance their daring expressions”.
Louis Vuitton, as a partner of the festival, presented boxes of jewelry and accessories to the winners of the interim jury and young people, “encouraging them to continue the spirit of artistic exploration of Fei Mu”.
In the Roberto Rossellini Awards section for international films – Le Brin des Tigers squatting festival – “The President’s Cake” by Hasan Hadi won the best film, receiving $ 20,000. The jury described him as a “brilliant and painful portrait” of two Iraqi children in the early 1990s navigating “the absurdity of political oppression and numb brutality”.
Akinola Davies Jr. won the Prix for the Best Director of Rossellini for “My Father’s Shadow”, shot on a 35 mm film. The jury praised his “dynamic portrait of a Nigeria who is just as personal and political”. “The World of Love” by Yoon Ga-Eun received the Rossellini Jury Award for his exploration of sexual violence in a silent community.
Miao Zhuangzhuang’s “Daughters” won the Tong Ye Prize and the Netpac Award for the best first film. Yangquan’s filmmaker Shanxi praised having created “an intimate film which, in a calm way, reveals deep interior conflicts and love within a family”.
The documentary by Qi Yanyan “The Toddling Youths” received the Prize for the Jury Fei Mu. The jury noted that “through a panorama of parameters and interactions”, the young rubber captures the journeys and decisions of youth, and reveals vibrant characters of the truth. “”
In the categories of short films, “After the Cat” by Chu Hoi Ying won the Fei Mu Prize for the best short film, while “the fast break, Quick Breath” by Longjianhui from the Central Academy of Drama has taken the best short student. The special mentions went to “I Wanna Fly” by Liu Canwen by the Shanghai Vancouver Film School and “Downnstream” by Song Yibo by the Beijing Film Academy.
The promotion section of the Pingyao project of the festival awarded development funds to emerging filmmakers. Wang Xiying and Wang Ruiyuan “The Songs We Never Blood” won the creative prize and 150,000 RMB ($ 21,000). Song Dongxu “Grassland Ska!” Received the Humanism Prize with 100,000 RMB ($ 14,000), while “Good, Bye” of a Jingyi won the most promising prize with 100,000 RMB ($ 14,000).
Momo Pictures sponsored a scenarios competition, with “The Flower Vender” by Memet Emetjan winning the Grand Prix of 250,000 RMB ($ 35,100). Five projects received Momo Sky selection awards of 50,000 RMB ($ 7,000) each: “Girl Crush” by Ravine Yang, “Take it it it it” by Ravine Yang, “The Killer” by my Huaichang and Xu Xiao, “The Killer does not have a weekend”.
The festival also presented the honors of success for life, including the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon East-West prize to the Fenng Xiaogang filmmaker and the Teruyo Nogami script supervisor, and the international contribution to the Chinese cinema prize at the co-founder of the Busan International Film Festival Kim Dong-Ho.
